No Stephanie. It’s would be like asking it to adhere to sand. You always need a clean grease free surface.

spray acrylic on it first and it helps the adhesion.

The vinyl might stick to the rust – but will the rust stick to the metal 😕

Its actually a vehicle we are doing, well I’m doing. Its my husband’s little car, their is just a little bit of rust by the wheels on the one side. And I’m wrapping his car to learn how to well wrap vehicles and I just wanted to see if it would cause any issues.

Steph, treat vinyl like paint, it will stick to rust, but not for long.
Rub the rust down to bare metal first, apply a couple of coats of primer, rub down smooth, then apply the vinyl

Rust is oxidation i.e rotting of iron through exposure by the reaction of iron with oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture.

It would be foolish to the extreme to apply any vinyl to panels that are that far gone in the terms of deterioration.

If you value your reputation refuse point blank and tell your customer to buy a new(er) vehicle.

Ali, its stephs husband’s car, so she would have a hard time telling him to buy a newer car… or would she?

We have other things to pay for that are more important then buying a newer vehicle, especially since there is nothing wrong with the one we have now. My husband is just bored of his white car and I need to learn how to wrap so I figured it would be a good place to start as its not that much of a concern if I mess it up of if it does not stay on all that long. As we are just going to use a HP roll of vinyl of what ever color we choose.

But thanks for the advice anyway Ali.
