fabricated: works table
Posted by Colin Waite on 22 March 2008 at 17:03We built our own table last year with storage under, the size is great @ 10′ x 5′ just costs when you need a new top. It works very well, we have thought about manufacturing them in two sizes, though the design only works well as a welded format. We tried a bolt together version but its not as stable. The loops work better than the solid pole design with no tube snagging on the end .
We are fitting shelves to the opposite side for even more storage.Hugh Potter replied 17 years, 7 months ago 6 Members · 12 Replies -

good idea. we are just in the throws of designing a new bench, more ideas welcome. our biggest decision is 10×5 or 8×4 ? if its 10×5 you cant reach the knife you left on the other side

Marie is 5′ and with a stretch can reach over though the compromise in walking round and having a great work surface where two people can work comfortably on opposite sides is what really swung our decision.
Plus as you can see it fits the laminator perfectly.
The cost of the plywood is about £60 for a 10′ x 5′ so this adds somewhat to the cost. We built this off site and transported it in a heavy beast.
I keep getting told off for moving it by myself, and we cant get the fork lift in this side of the building. No one believed me that I could move it complete with everything still in place by myself, so I had to give the all a lesson in basic principals of motion and brute force. My advice go as large as you can in the space you have.

Hi Colin
Very Nice table M8. and a nice large working space also 😮
When we get to build our table what do you think the best type of top to use a 18mm ply sheet with a thin steel plate finish or a perspex sheet finish. myself I was thinking that the surface may rust over in less used points with the steel sheet and as for the perspex sheet will this just cut up very fast and need to be changed after a short time, did you use 25mm box section for the rack and 40mm box section for the main table ???
all the best

paul try a glass top on a smaller area see how you get on i like it. our smaller bench has a 7ft x 3 ft glass top and love it.
our present 8×4 bench has a sacrificial fomex top that works well. costs a new sheet every 6 mts.Chris

What type of glass and what cost chris mate? i work with glass and find it pretty expensive if not bought in bulk.
colin, excellent table mate… on the other side ide have half, "more vinyl holders and half shelves for application tape" 😀

sorry dont know costs return favor from the boys over the road with a glass decorating business. ground edges 6mm on top of a old internal door for strength. not toughened thou so one day.

Will need to have a look at that one Chris.
Might be the way I should go, I know when my shop window was done in  it cost me £350.00 😥 just for the Glass 1.8Mtr x 1.8Mtr x 6mm but that was laminated safety glass.
Thanks for that M8 😉

great looking table,
Mine is 1200mm x 3600mm with 6mm toughened glass on top. I replace the glass only when it breaks. Been thru 2 sheets of glass in 16 years. The first sheet broke when I had a staff member decide to hammer some timber together , and missed with the hammer 👿 the second time was when I moved factorys 🙁
When it gets really scratched, you just get it flipped over. Only reason it scratches tho is trying to cut with a blunt blade.

other way for glass is old failed double glazed units, from patio doors, but as its probably toughened you wont cut it down.

We were lucky a few years ago we bought a load (and I mean a load) of office furniture from an auction and one item was a brushed steel framed toughend glass conference table that had been bought two weeks before they went bust, they paid £1200 for it we paid £10 and it also makes a great light box.
I love bargains that prove useful.
We use cutting mat on half the table which I have found is more forgiving on knife blades than the glass.
We are planning a new sheet storage unit and a digital media storage unit. -
Hi Colin & Chris

my bench consists of two pieces of 6mm toughened glass, timber frame, the glass measures 1750 x 800 (each) and costs about £100, i’ve only broken one sheeet…
gggrrrrr, just realised… when i bought the first two sheets, it cost £110 + vat for the pair, when i broke one a few months back, he said he’d have to get a price, stoopid me opened my mouth and said i think it was "about £100 last time", now i realise that was for both sheets, not just one, that smells of dishonesty to me, his next sign job will be £50 dearer now. git.
anyways, yes, broke one sheet when i caught the end edge with a metal ruler, it just exploded! prior to that i’d dropped hammers, and all sorts of things on it with o ill effects.
i also cover the glass with white vinyl on one side and use it as a light bench, this also helps hold the glass together should it blow up!
Nice bench btw!
