not sure if there are any budget a3 scanners about, they all appear to be very expensive, many times more than an a4, but only double the size.

I looked for one a while ago, but without success,
I would also be interested in any suggestions

Do you have SCSI? I know it’s a bit old technology wise, but if you could
get a SCSI card for your computer, I know someone who has a Linotype
Ultra, which he no longer requires. These things cost a bomb when they
came out. If you’re interested, I can find out a price. Don’t think it will be much.
I think it comes with Linocolor Elite software, but I’m not sure what
    platform this would be

    Cheers,
    Jamie.

Just my bit, I got a brand new A3 scanner of ebay for £35 + £10 delivered, its no magic machine, its a few years old model but it works with windows xp ( not vista ) It does the simple stuff i need it to, think it must have been a warehouse clean out, he was selling 20 or so, this was only last week, comes with software etc. I was like the rest of you, 250+ market

Umax Powerlook 3000 are good for A3, SCSI though – which personally I’ve never had any problems with and in the main was the connection used on higher spec repro but not on machines for the home market.

The linotype ultra is basically a rebaged Umax (A4) with some firmware tweeks. You can pick them up with Linocolor software for the Mac – the PC software was called Newcolor 4000 or 5000.

This one is either an Opal Ultra or Saphir Ultra. Definitely A3.

I watched several A3 scanners sell for up to $1200 on ebay here in Australia, but I finally got an Avision one with auto document feeder for $275- it’s an oldie but a goodie. and it has a scsi port, so I had to get a scsito PCI card for the computer, and a lead, but it is so FAST, it makes all USB stuff seem slow!
The ADF was worth its weight in gold, too- it’ll scan & OCR 25 pages a minute.

I think because it needed a scsi card, the demand was not there for it. It also took a bit of configuring to get it working. When new, it was a $2200 unit. I’d recommend it to anyone- the Avision brand, based on this one.
