will vinyl stick properly to emulsion paint?
Posted by Peter Dee on 10 March 2008 at 08:12I’ve been asked to quote for applying vinyl signs directly on to emulsion painted walls.
I’ve warned them that on removal it’s going to pull the paint off.
Couple of questions. Will the vinyl stick properly, especially when pulling off the app tape?
Should I use short term removable vinyl?
Has anyone done this before?
Any help welcomed.

Hi peter
i have done a job similar i used 9800 mac and conform med tack
the vinyl will pull the paint off when removed.
the med tack paper came away with patience so in future i would use low tack it was mostly small text

Hi Peter,
I’ve done quite a lot of applying to emulsion, both vinyl graphics and paint mask. What I do is reduce the ‘tack’, even on medium tack by flipping over the application tape and give the tack side a few strokes of a squeegee. Or put some talc on your hand and rub lightly over surface. Might be a problem with very small lettering, but I find with the reduced tack, even on dodgy walls the vinyl sticks and the tape just peels away.
Suggest you do a test piece to judge how much tack to remove
Hope this helps

Thanks for that Pat. Don’t want to look an idiot in front of a customer so all advice appreciated.

Peter,
Depending on size of text, I normally use my thumb to rub down, keeping as much of the application tape off the wall. Try a few sample pieces. Nothing as bad as when client is standing behind you and lumps of his lovely painted wall starts coming away with the tape.
Also make sure you have a touch up pot of whatever colour wall is painted with…..just in case

We have done this quite a bit. Always use Mactac 8900 series semi permanent. This means client can remove without damaging the paint and also its a lot easier to fit as you can lift and relay if you get a wrinkle etc.
The downside is removing the application tape without lifting the graphic off the wall or stretching the vinyl but a little patience and technique (every time its slightly different) its not a major issue.
As previously said, use a little bit of application tape on the wall before you start to test how well the paint has bonded to the wall.

There is a product called Peeleezee, it might do the trick

i have applied to vinyl emulsion i used to colour match a stand off board to a customers wall, but otherwise i hate it.
did an old ford transit mobile library type van on sat am, now a burger van (i know.. i get all the good jobs!).
it had a manky paint job, over which someone had rollered a new coat (single coat!), the sides and rear went ok is, with a bit of paint being pulled off by the app paper, but the front above the cab was a nightmare, the paper puller vinyl up with paint attached to it, eventually i was holding bits down to ensure they didn’t lift any further, then superglued them all back down, all this while balancing precariously on the top of the bonnet!
told the customer before i started that i won’t guarantee the finish or longevity of the work on the given surface, he said he doesn’t case so long it lasts a year. i’ll be surprised if the top bit is still there in a month!
he was having it done at the garage where i do the recovery trucks, i told him it MUST be in there friday eve, i’ll fit it on sat morning, and he can collect it at 5pm sat. when i arrived at 9am, they’d clearly only just brought it in (still had hail on the wiper blades), and drove it out again as soon as i’d finished, back into sleet and hail 🙄 🙄

Hi all as you may have seen I have just applied so many meters of vinyl to the walls at great ormond street hospital, this was applied to fresh paint and in a few places when removing the application tape (where it was in direct contact with paint) did pull a little paint off. The wards had been refurbished on a budget and not the best key was given to the old paint, however most applications were fine, the vinyl sticks very well to the paint just a case of it the paint has keyed to the old paint !!
