  • Online email, bookmarks etc… and Google!

Posted by Robert Lambie on 22 February 2008 at 20:38

I am not sure how many of you rely heavily on Internet activity or resources, but for me it is a must. i need the net 24/7.

I’ve been with BT from the day i got a computer. always had a BT Internet account and never had any problems until the last year when BT randomly started Binning email contacts as spam. there was no pattern in it, one comes in one day, same sender the next day goes into spam bin.
it has now got to the point i need to go through all my emails and then sit going through all the spam folder too… 100’s upon 100’s of cak!

next comes bookmarks. i spend allot of time bookmarking finds on-line.
at work, at my mums, on my laptop, at home etc etc the problem is, the bookmarks are all over the place. i get home and say "oh must check that" then cant find it because its book marked at work PC! same goes for meetings when i am using my laptop… in short, i need everything in one place and reliable.

anyway… i could go on with various scenarios. my point is, in the past few months I’ve opened a proper paying account with Google. only about £25-30 per year. mega space for emails and tons of functionality like responders, calender prompts, you name it… one that’s a great advantage and this part is free and that’s "iGoggle" this part is free but it combines with paying accounts. you get your google homepage which you log-in into and it keeps you logged in on ANY computer. (you only log-in once) anyway… bookmarking and favourites all go to your on-line account so no matter which computer you use or where in the WORLD you are. you always have your "bookmarks", "diary entries" and "need to do lists". coupled with the same with "emails" and much more, you really are onto a winner.
another big advantage is, lets say you have a hard drive failure and loss all computer content? important emails, bookmarks, dates etc etc all gone!
however, have it in one location on-line and nothing gets lost…

anyway, just thought ide mention this as a heads up to those that don’t know about it. those that do use it, how are you finding it and do you have any tips of your own for me? 😀

Sounds like it solves quite a few of the problems we all seem to have to often, especially when the business & home are 2 different locations.

I’ve always liked google for it’s simplicity & use it as my main search engine, can you post a link to this service Rob….for 30 quid it sounds well worth a try

not quite John, an iphone may connect , but its the program or provider that gives the functionality,
Rob try going for bt business rather than the "home version" far more reliable, and does what you want.

Gimmie a few minutes and ill find the link mate…

John, as you know, i went for the blackberry pearl. really only getting to grios with it but find it excellent as far as receiving my emails, contacts etc. however, im still depending on BT getting the right emails to me on time. as well as book marks etc. regadless to an iphone or Blackberry. googles email server is keeping ontop of things whilst your iphone homepage could easily be your iGoogle homepage complete with all your work PC’s same bookmarks and more. "everything under one roof, regardless to where in the world you are!" 😀

Peter, i pay extra on top of my isp etc to keep my old btinternet account address… i do also pay extras for my connections and more as a business. im also under 1 mile away from a recently upgraded BT exchange. if anything i should be getting the maximum BT can offer, but im getting far from it and my simple daily tasks are now feeling like a chore. 😕 aside from all bt problems… the remote access to everything anywhere is really a BIG benefit for me.

Yeah, I know Peter, but it’s close.

I sync bookmarks, calendars, contacts, keychains, mail accounts, mail rules, signatures and smart mailboxes on my work desktop, home laptop and my iPhone.

    Hi Neil…

This is the free igoogle. you just create and account using an existing email account. then log-in and customise your google homepage.
you login only once on each pc location and all computers are in sinq with each other. 😀

yes, but my nokia does all that, and has satnav as well..
and the rental is only 10 quid a month with 500 mins to any network.

If your using Outlook or Outlook Express

Install Spamfighter that shane mentioned back along

There is a free version and a commerical version, I like the way it was doing it and purchased one for the server. It works by sharing known spam information with the world of other ‘spam fighters’, my spam rate has dropped significantly considering I host lots of domains.

    Here is the stats:-

    SPAMfighter Exchange Module statistics
    Processed: 33146
    Blocked: 17549
    Ignored: 5215
    Ratio: 53 %
    Money saved: $ 701.96
Time saved: 1 days, 10 hours, 7 minutes, 23 seconds

Don’t ask me how it calculates it lol… I think we have been on it now for about 7 months now with 10 users.

    http://www.spamfighter.com/

The amount of time it has saved and money is crazy. No more looking in the email account every five minutes and I have it all linked up to my mobile, so it doesn’t notify me every 10 minutes

The google mail account maybe useful for you… so yes, its a good idea… possible comes with its own google mobile edition i guess too

Dave, i do appreciate that there are many reliable alternatives to Bt email/isp and the like mate. more my point is the remote access to any of these desktop computer resources anyplace, anytime. The Google account offers this and a whole lot more… not forgetting reliability. your PC can crash anytime… as much as these wonderful resources can too, ide bet a Google business account far more reliable than a home PC or Work computer.

i haven’t tested google… but then again it wouldn’t be any quicker then what I have setup for our company.. i know straightaway when email comes in, wherever I am.

I have no idea if it can be used with your own domain names, so i dont know

Spamfighter is relatively straight forward.. strange
