  • why do i get cannot ‘detect baud rate’ error with summa?

Posted by Pazz on 9 February 2008 at 20:37

Hi guys, this is a new area of work for me. I have just purchased a d1220 cutter for £50 (cheap I think), have downloaded s/ware from summa website and have had no luck getting work to the cutter. The summa will initialize it will do a test cut (right arrow when powering on it will also plot settings on board cutter to a sheet of paper) so things cant be too bad.
When I load the cutter tools on my PC everything looks ok until I try to access any settings on the cutter, it comes back with "cannot detect baud rate" in a box on the screen.
    please any ideas gentlemen.

ps with an osccilloscope on pin 3 of the circuit board in the end of the cutter there is data coming from my pc!!! (while it is trying to auto-detect baud rate)

if serial connection it must be the correct cable.
pin 2 -3 crossed over if i remember.
if you connect via lpt port the plotter can not be polled as to its set up width.

Check your settings in winplot. The baud rate settings should be 9600.

You’d better introduce yourself before someone chews your leg off. 😉

I think it will only give you the baud rate info AFTER you have loaded the machine with media.

Thank you very much Chris Wool, So obvious, tried a "null modem cable " and BINGO it all spings to life. Completely forgot that 2&3 pins needed to be swapped !!!(should have known that from my years as a computer engineer)
I have never used a vinyl cutter before and I am amazed at how fast and accurate they are.
Can anybody recommend a budget piece of cutting s/ware (am currently using a trial version of signblazer!)
Again thank you very much for your help

    Pazz.

    Hi Pazz.
Glad you got it working mate. If you use coral 11 – 12 or X3 you can down load winplot from the Summa site for free. Works a treat.
