  • What business structure is doing better

    Hi All

    Just had a thought while reading the other thread about who is quiet and who is busy. I wonder if having premises helps during the busy times and is overall better for appearing more established?

    So I think a vote above might help show if it does.

    I think it could help Warren, but we have worked from home since we started we are mostly busy you have seen some of our work, I see lot’s of our work every day some done when we first started, it does take quite a long time for the word of mouth to kick in but believe me it does.
    mind saying that if we could find suitable premises we would.

    hi, i don’t want to sound cheeky or ignorant etc but how does a sign making company operate without premises?

    what i mean is we always try to manufacture everything we sell, with a few small exceptions like light boxes, but pantrim frames, sign boards, fitting vinyl to vehicles and any metal work/ fabrications we produce in house.

    so what i mean is how do companies with no premises do all this?

    Steve, working from home does have its advantages, but we are lucky to have plenty of space, we could not do it from a bedroom,
    we have three rooms that we use for sign making, plus the garage.
    so its not a problem, we also have off road parking, and if need be, I can arrange, indoor fitting for any vehicle, and I never tell a customer I cant do it because of the weather.

    I would love to have my own premises, but then I would loose 18k a year, so would have to up my workload, employ staff, and join the rat race again. as it is I am smiling all the way to the bank…

    hey warren,

    does your local council run any business parks in your area??

    we run our business from 2 units in a business park, this business park has no shop front of such and is in a converted factory. rents are fairly reasonable and rate are included in the cost.

    maybe this is the route you could look in??

    i just imagined someone working from home as from a bedroom or back room somewhere or a shed…so apologies if it sounded daft.

    Not sure what is available Roy as I did not want to really start asking questions until I was actually in a position to take something on if affordable, I will look in to it as soon as business picks up and is a viable option for me.

    hi lynn, i started from some premises that we use for another business so we basically combined the premises to operate both businesses.

    I started from home, a double garage for the big stuff and a spare bedroom approx 14′ square for the machines. I would love to have carried on trading from home but as time went on I found it tight on space and large vehicles were a problem.

    Then I moved to a unit about 50 sq m then again to our current workshop, which should do for the foreseeable future. It is costly but I couldn’t survive without it. If I could I’d be walking to the bank with Peter and a great big grin! 😀

    it all depends on your home layout, i started at home part time 23 years ago. yes it was a hobby that when stupid, went full time around 14 years ago moved in to a unit and instantly increased the customer base, by just being there.
    customer are more comfortable to walk in to a business premises rather than a home. and it saves a lot of running around to see them.

    i have an office in a very plush part of town which costs me £100 a month in rent and just taken on a large workshop 30ft x 30ft with air con, velux windows in roof for £250 a month, cant wait to move in, I have been studying for an HNC in photography for the last coupe of years and plan to build a full working studiol linked to my Digital printing business.

    I would recommend anyone who is fed up of working at home to place an advert on your local Gumtree.co.uk saying wanted small amount of space required for signwriting company there are hundreds of people out there willing to sub – let, usually on a month to month basis.

    I use to work from home but found it very difficult separating my home life from my work life, for example the wife always saying why cant we go to ikea, your not working your down the shed!.

    It has helped out business a fair bit.

    We started in our lounge room. Ending up taking the billiard room, dining room, hallway, veranda.

    We were never confident to openly ask people to come over.

    Now we do and when people come see us we try and sell them other things.

    It’s good to be able to show them extra products.

    More over does the increase in costs correlate to an increase in revenue? I will have to tell you in a year.
