cutting thermo-refletive
hi all, got a bit of spare time this afternoon, so thought i’d have a go at cutting and applying thermoflex to a hi vis vest.
the problem i encountered was that the material decided to keep rucking up in the cutter, any reason for this ?
i was supposed to remove the pink backing wasn’t I ??

Hughps, what kind of cutting pressure do you use? i’m trying less pressure and blade depth, but it still wrinkles a bit, therefore not cutting the whole letter 🙁

ok, thermoflex extra is no bother, it’s just the one with the pink coating that’s a pain!

I cut all flex at between 80 and 130 grams depending how blunt my blade is.
Easy cut or extra flex may need more.
you can leave the pink backing but its easier to take off before you have to weed it. -
cheers steve, i had a bit of a play yesterday, only on the thermo reflective though, the ‘extra’ was fine, but the regular one with the pink, just doesn’t seem strong enough to sit and be cut! i tried it with the pink backing on, but it just curled up to much and was causing other probs, i might try rolling it backward onto another bigger roll, giving it a bit of heat, and leaving it for a few days…. tell it who’s boss like!

…wonder why I made the same mistake the first time I tried cutting thermo reflective stuff- and it’s murder weeding the pink off after it’s been plotted.
At least I didn’t forget to reverse the design!
Pressure-wise, I found normal pressure worked fine, but I stuck the plotter blade out a whisker more.
P.S. to stop the curling, I rolled it sticky-side (& pink sheet) out.
Also, I taped a 50cm metal ruler to the leading edge, to weigh it down as we plotted near the start, as the curlup was ridiculous.. -

Can you tell me about Thermotex Extra, and where you get it please. Not heard of that one, and it sounds much easier to use 🙂 🙂

HI Barb,
got it from grafityp, the pink one i believe is for cottons etc, the xtra is for polyester like the hi-vis jackets. think its around the same price, not got the invoice to hand though,

ian, thanks for the steel rule tip, might try that, as you say, the curl up is hideous! have had it pressed flat on the bench for 3 days, warm workshop, lifted off the weights and the sheet covering it, and the lot sprang back!
