where can i buy a cutting table please?
Posted by Mark Stead on 10 January 2008 at 12:55Hi all
Thought its time to invest in a new metal frame cutting table from my home made wooden one. Does anyone know of a good supplier? Was hoping for one over 8ft x 4ft
Cheers

Mark you may struggle to get a one piece table at that sort of size, I had four workshop tables which were 4′ x 2′ bolted together (Just the sort you can get from any workshop supplier) with an 8′ x 4′ sheet of 19mm MDF on top to ensure it was all level and to hide any joints and dips in the table tops. 2 4′ x 4′ sheets of 6mm glass finished it off. It was very stable and I had no problems hoping up on the bench to work if I needed to.

Peter, let’s just say I have been better. Can’t really say to much here and I wouldn’t want to hijack Marks post anyway.

Cheers both for your help. Thought I was going mad not finding a purpose built one. Will look at those you recommended.
Does a 6mm glass top work well for cutting on? Currently am using a large cutting matt (not self healing) but gets marked so quickly.

Mark, what you use for a cutting surface is really down to personal choice. Try doing a search on the boards as it has been discussed quite a bit in the past and you should find all the answers are already on the boards.
Personaly I think it is the best surface you can get and will last you a lifetime. Trouble I found with mats was that after a while your knife blade use to follow an old cut line when you were preping something even if you were using a straight edge. That won’t happen with a glass top but you will find that blades don’t last as long as the glass will take the edge off them quicker.
Other people favour different tops which don’t blunt the bade as quickly so you won’t go through as many blades but you will have to change the top every now and again. Think the stuff some use costs about £30 a sheet and will last about 3 years or so with fairly heavy use. -
Hi Martin good to see you back.
The stuff talked about we got last year and I have to say I think it’s pretty rubbish, it scars almost as easy as foam and the blade then tracks in it. It is recommended on here and will be found on searches but it’s not for us.
Like Martin sais glass. If only I went down this route last year… ho-hum, you live and learn!
