  • will ant graffiti laminate print correctly on JV3 prints?

    Hi Everyone-

I’m about to do a huge job that requires using a anti graffiti laminate. The customer asked that we don’t use 3M anti graffiti laminate because a prior job with another sign co. cause bubbles with 3M laminate.

I am going to do some tests with a product called Neschen filmolux uve. Has anybody used this before?

My co-workers are concerned that the solvent ink prints that are laminated too soon are still "gassing" and this could cause bubbles in the print because the anti-graffiti laminate is not as porous as regular laminates.

I will be printing onto 3M ControlTac with Comply.

I don’t do enough laminating to have justified buying a laminator but we are considering it for this job. Up to now, I’ve been laminating prints with the wet technique using Rapidtac and a rubber squeegee.

If anyone has some expert advice on these subjects that would be great.
Specifically on solvent inks gassing/dry times and experience with anti graffiti laminates.

    Thanks, David

    Hi David.

I don’t think that your customer’s previous problem was caused by using 3M material, rather that it was laminated too soon after printing.

I normally leave our JV3 prints a minimum of 24 hours and get no trouble but in this case, because you have to ensure that there is no recurrence of the previous problem, I would leave them longer. Maybe three days.

Obviously, as your instructions are not to use 3M, you have no choice but to use something else but what I would do is to make a small sample piece with the 3M laminate to prove the drying time theory, which you can then show to your customer. If it doesn’t change his mind at least it will show him that you know what you are talking about and be good for customer relations.

we sometimes laminate 2 hours after printing…. never had a bubble problem nor noticed any prints delaminating after time.

Sometimes you get the issue of 5pm approaching, customer collecting car, vinyl you are applying suddenly screws up and need another printed. It’s happened a few times and need a print quick and laminated.

we use wet techniques by hand or laminator.

I was always lead to believe that liquid laminates eventually cracks and peels in the heat, i should imagine it gets hot where you are?

The laminates we use metamark, we also sell as a dry wipe system, ie for sales boards, weekly planners etc. but if you use permanent markers on the laminated surface, it will stay permanent as the pen suggests.

I did recently put some signage up in a school where they also stated the same thing anti graffiti prints, we eventually supplied them with graffiti remover which works a treat and doesn’t harm the laminate.
