  • help please on layering vinyls?

I recently made up some logos for a friends van. I wanted to put as much of them together on the bench as possible but couldn’t seem to get my organisation right!

(Image is in file swapping forum if you would like to look!)

The main problem was that I cut all the colour layers together, but then found that when I came to put them all together the different layers needed to be split up. For example the base layer is yellow in the main square area, but the yellow is on the top of the lower section.

Also, the when I was applying the blue layer onto the background yellow layer I had no way to get the blue text to stick to the backing paper of the yellow layer, as of course the application tape is much stickier than the vinyl’s adhesion to the backing.

I had a nightmare with the first logo, and ended up putting the others together as much as I could on the bench and then finished the layers when I actually had the base layers on the vehicle. It took bloody ages to apply what amounted to 4 medium sized graphics, due to the number of layers and all the alignment required.

Any genius methods for a job like this?

Can you lend me some cash?

Would love one, but simply not enough use to justify it.

Having looked at the image I reckon it would be quicker and easier to assemble it on the van. As you have said, removing the tape in order to apply the next layer can be more trouble than it’s worth sometimes.

One tip though, if any of the layers are going onto the paper liner rather than other vinyl then you need to apply that layer last, so that you don’t have to remove the tape.

One way around this would be to put down a solid layer of yellow below the scroll that says "do it once – do it right" and cut out the wording on the blue band that fits over this. This way you don’t have to split the layers

is there a black outline round the "SCC" or is it just the jpg? and is it a white van?
If you post an ai a file, It will be easier for others to layer it for you (i’m just off to bed after kill bill2, but if you dont get a solution from the others, I can sort it for you tomorrow, for future ref.

There is a black outline around the large letters and the van was silver but they insisted I make the bits on the scroll white.

I guess I should have cut through the scroll to expose the yellow behind.
