  • Printable vinyl in a normal desktop printer? possible?

Posted by steve day on 19 December 2007 at 11:46

HI all, i have been asked by a friend to design & print some decal sets for 1:10 scale model cars, unfortunately at the moment i dont have the cash flow to purchase the said printer but i was wondering if there is any way this can be done on a normal everyday printer?

    Is it possible?

What would i need to do it ?

    thanks in advance.

not onto sign vinyl, you couldn’t.

you could print onto adhesive backed paper and then laminate in clear vinyl by hand. but i don’t think its going to look too hot in comparison.

You can get proper stuff for making model decals for inkjet and laser printers. A4 size. Good stuff. Can’t post a link but google for craftycomputerpaper 😀

what do you reckon durability would be on these?

i dont think the waterslide will be good for what i need and the printable sticky backs have to be laminated to be waterproof.

    Hi Steve
Email sent back you you. I have been down this route with a desktop printer. You can get vinyl in A4 sheets that you can print on with a desktop printer, but it is not waterproof and show it some nitro fuel and you will have a clean piece of white vinyl!!! You would need to laminate the print to make it tougher, but even then it does not work too well.
Even using the Roland Versacamm I have now the print out does not resist nitro fuel, but is waterproof. I still laminate everything for model car use then the stickers seem to take anything thrown at them so far!!! I hope this helps.
