Which Printer ?
Posted by Adam Ross on 14 December 2007 at 18:29Hi all
I am new to this business, about 6 months or so. Have been doing mostly cut vinyl work but am considering buying a printer. I do mostly small signs and vans. Any ideas on what i would need to get me started, and what i would have to spend, would consider buying second hand, anything i should steer clear of ?

Hi Adam
Steer clear of the PC60 PC600 Roland printers on ebay. The heads can go very easily and Roland UK don’t support the PC60 anymore and probably don’t support the PC 600. I have one and it is sitting gathering dust these days. Instead I bought a Uniform Cadet Plus and it is in a different league. If money is tight I would buy second user or ex demo machine. All the printer sale people do these but personally I wouldn’t buy private again because what happens if it develops a fault? For peace of mind I would want a warranty as heads cost a small fortune to replace. Others will no doubt recommend other machines as there is many good printer makes. Another thing to bear in mind is do you want a printer or a print & cut machine?

Hi
I have been in the sign business for many years, both paint and vinyl.
I have thought about printers and have had a lot of conversations with various people about them.
The view I have come to is that unless you have a job through the door that will pay for it or endless work for one, then they are not worth it, as there seems to be a hassle factor with them. ( look at previous post re heads graining etc)
What I have done, is establish a good working relationship with a company that has good printers, and a person who is very knowledgeable with them and the sign industry, and buy from them.I still do the art work, send file, go collect. No Hassle.
Yes I do pay more then making your own but put on your own mark up.
Just my two pennies worth !

I have only just purchased a printer and I have to say its fantastic. I have a Roland SP30V which is a new printer but an older model , setting up is easy and quality is great I have used a set of inks in the 4 weeks I have had it and thats about 200 meters of print @730 wide. Many people will say go for a cutter and separate printer I however like the ability to print and cut in one go this worked great for me just finished a 2000 print and cut job !!
I again would say go for eco sol if its not going to get used every day and now with rolands ecosol max inks the quality is as good as some solvent prints i have tested

Doesn’t print&cut only work if you are not laminating ? Otherwise you have to take it off and put it back any way, than it does not really matter if the cutter is seperate?
But what do I know 🙄 got no printer or anything 😥

correct mate but there are many jobs that dont need laminating. I laminate all outside print and vehicle print
