Normal Vinyl on Banners
Posted by JonnyAnnett on 29 November 2007 at 23:20Hi all,
This has probably been asked a thousand and one times but I can’t find anything on it.
I’ve had a client come to me asking for me to produce him a banner for his son’s wall. I’m told the banner will more than likely remain in place for its lifetime or until his son gets bored of the idea.
I have the colours of vinyl that he wants in stock (Avery 600 Series) would this be suitable enough for the banner given the purpose that it will be used for? I know that there are specialist banner vinyls but I’d rather not have to buy them if I could help it. Hopefully someone will be able to guide me.
As you have probably guessed I haven’t worked with any banners before so what are they like to work with? Anything that I should know which could cause problems?
Also just want to see if any of you guys and girls could recommend me a well priced supplier of banners? I’m after something around 5ft in length.
Cheers

So long as it’s not rolled / folded or exposed to extreme temps, normal vinyl on a static banner is OK.
As for banner suppliers – "bannerbox" are pretty reasonable in cost – or buy a roll of "banana banner" (From Europoint?)…and just chop off the length your require (double eyelets every 2′).

I use regular vinyl on banners all the time.
The type of banners I make are usually for short terms of less than a year, but I have had no problems using Oracal 651, 751, 851 on them.
I tell the client to roll lettered side out not fold and to hang tautly.
I have had several failures with Avery vinyl, however, and would be quite leery of using it in any application.
As for banners, you have to make them in even increments, say 4′ or 6′, if buying them premade.
I try to get all my banners from USBannerCorp, but you probably would have a hard time with that!
Also love banana/bandanna banner rolls.
If this banner is for interior use I am sure you will be just fine.
It would probably be fine outside as well.

i know allot of folk do this and dont have any problems. however, i remember way back when we just started doing signs we would apply spandex cast vinyls to everything. even banners… we got away with this for about 3-4 months, then they started coming back… all around the same time. i hated it, i had to remove all the vinyl that had deformed from being rolled up and unrolled etc as it was cast it was hard to get off, but even harder to remove the glue. we didnt have much space back then and i remember for about a week solid sitting on a stone floor picking and cleaning these banners to renew the text and send them back out. NOT any fun… i can tell you. anyway… we learned our lesson quick and have never done it again. from then on it was always banner vinyl. nowadays 9/10 banners we do are printed… but if its cut vinyl, its banner vinyl.
if its always fine to use the regular vinyls, why did the suppliers invent the banner vinyl in the first place? i would expect it was to overcome a problem? -
We have used Avery A6 vinyl on banners and never had one come back. A couple of the banners have been hanging for close to 2 years.
To be honest the first time I heard of banner vinyl was on this board but I have never seen it advertised by any of our suppliers.

I’m with Rob on this one! I think for this job it’s maybe not really an issue but I would never use normal vinyl on a banner.
I know you can tell the customer ‘don’t roll it / it’s only going to last a year’ or whatever you want to tell them but truth is they wont listen and although you have covered yourself it’s still your work out there looking crap when they fold it and try and use it for 5 years! If you do enough vinyl banners there is no reason not to stock and small range of banner vinyl, if you don’t buy them printed like Peter suggested.

We’ve used normal vinyl on banners without any problems in the past as long as they stay flat…………but for me it is more of a visual thing….I just hate to see gloss vinyls on banners……..I just don’t think it looks right

I`m with Peter on this one. If you can buy a full colour banner for a little more than a blank banner what is the point in bothering to even worry about it.
Just my take on it anyway.

Hi Guys,
From the amount of work that I’m expecting to be banners I don’t really think that I need to have banner specific vinyl to be fair this is more due to the fact that it would probably money wasted. Although if banners do become a popular part of my work then I will invest in some of this vinyl. With regard to Avery vinyl I’ve never had a problem with it for any other application, although I do believe that there was a problem with their adhesive a few years ago.
I know that the standard vinyl would probably cause some problems with banners if they where incorrectly stored so this is what is putting me off. It think it could see a bit of abuse so I think that the idea of getting one printed from Express Banners like Peter has suggested is probably by best route at the minute. Peter do you have a contact number and a person to speak to in Express Banners? What is there turn around like?
Cheers for your help.

i’ve used oracle 651 and 751 on plenty of banners with no comeback as yet (touch wood!).i do have a couple of banner vinyls (black and blue i think), but just don’t have the space to stock too many!

I used oracal 651 on a length of banana banner for a charity I gave it away to, other than that I keep, blue, white, gold, silver red, and black banner vinyl, theres hardly any difference to cast in price anyway and you know youre not going to have it back any time soon.
That said, if they look after the banner and roll it right 651 and 751 should be just fine.
LG do a vinyl that is remarkably like banner vinyl in feel, cant remember where I got it but it definitely wasn’t banner vinyl, just normal calendered matt vinyl. -
Ok guys,
Thanks for all your input. I’ve just spoken with Express Banners, got a quote for what I’m after and will forward to the customer.
I will let you know how we get on.
Regards
Jonny
