  • Technique please for applying vinyl to glass 2600×1100

    Hi
I’m new to both this forum an vinyl fitting. I need to fit vinyl (opal frost) to panel of glass 2600mm high x 1100mm wide (just all over cover). What technique do you recommend? I will be on my own.

I have browsed around and people say:
    a) wet the glass with soapy solution
    b) put the vinyl to the glass with backing paper facing away from glass
    c) peel off backing paper
    d) wet the adhesive surface with soapy solution
    e) peel-off vinyl and reverse sides (so adhesive side now faces glass)
    f) firm down
    g job done.

Is this the best way? I worried about step e – that is, getting the film off the glass by myself and getting wrinkles.

    I welcome any advice.

That should be ok, just don’t put too much soap in the water. Only a tiny amount is needed. You may not need to spray the vinyl aswell, just spray the window. We just did a load of windows in the same way and they went on very easy.

    Thanks
What happens if there is too much soap in the water?

I wouldn’t spray the window, just make sure the window has been cleaned well.
Spray the VINYL not the window, the vinyl becomes very static and if you catch it on anything you will ruin the vinyl, don’t over spray, just a fine mist always works well and then just squeegee out with a felt sqeegee.
    Job done. 😀

But don’t I need to spray the glass so that I can put the vinyl on ‘backwards’ to get the backing paper off?

If possible, do not put the vinyl onto the glass to remove the backing paper. Do it somewhere else. There is the risk of getting dust onto the glass this way. Basically the technique you suggested is fine and will work. Knowing this you must try it and you will see that it is not too difficult and you will learn your own technique. The biggest problem you are likely to get is from dust and dirt.

If you put too much soap in the water, the vinyl may slip down or move too easily. Also I would never recommend soap or washing up liquid. Use baby shampoo instead.

Finally never take on a job like this in a Tropical Fish shop. You can’t get rid of the condensation and the vinyl just slips down. You can guess how I found that out!!!
