  • help please with a backlit halo sign?

    hey all,

been trying out a idea for a customers new sign, i’ve followed Andy G’s demo for making a backlit halo effect sign,

as you can see in the pics, i’m having a problem with the black text halo effect, the orange is a reflective, and the black a standard oracle 651, it’s only a 3mm perspex (all i had to hand), but it works fine on the orange, why might it be not working on the black text ?

as this is a prototype, purely to try to encourage the customer to get moving again, it’s only 610mm long, so i can accept the halo effect on the small lettering is not great, the cut out behind it is very small,

    am i missing something ?

the white, and the black backing both have the letters (inside contoured by 2mm), and are the same size, is this where i’m going wrong ? should the text in the black backing be larger than the white backing ?

    thanks.
    Hugh

Have you done the lettering in white first, on the front? You need to as this causes the light to bounce back onto the background.

You should have white letters on the front with another identical set laid on top in black or orange or whatever. If you only have black then no reflection will happen. If you look at the demo I have included pictures of every layer needed.

thanks Andy, that’ll be it then, i din’t put white behind the letters on the front ! it makes no odds with the reflective orange as the back is a shiny silver !

    thanks, i’ll amend it tomorrow.

I noticed that the orange worked ok, but consider that you may get 2 different levels of halo brightness if one has white behind but the orange doesn’t.

When I copied Andy’s demo, I found that 3mm worked better. Just depending on what thickness outline and thickness of substrate depends on halo flair 😕 :lol1: http://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.p … highlight=

thanks ali, thankfully vinyl comes off of acrylic fairly easy, so i can have a few plays at getting it right, i suspect that if the customer likes this then it’ll have to be 5mm as it’s gonna be around 1500 long x 300 wide.

    nice idea though.
