can i apply vinyl onto Painted plywood?
Posted by Phil Jones on 5 November 2007 at 17:41Hi, This may sound a silly question but i have to ask, will oracal 751c stick ok to a painted plywood panel as the customer already has the boards painted white and wants me to apply red lettering, but he seems convinced it wont stick which has made me wonder. Like i said probably a silly question but had to ask!
Thanks in advance
Phil

you shouldnt have any problem, after all vinyl is stuck to paint every day…

I would be careful Phil as you don’t know what paint was used etc.
Advise him in writing that on well prepared primed and gloss painted surfaces there is not usually a problem but adhesion can be affected by the paint used and the smoothness of the substrate.
Best to cover your back. -
If the plywood has been painted with oil-based enamel, the 751 will stick like the proverbial **** to a blanket.
If painted with latex (water-based, acrylic) you may indeed have adhesion probs, especially with a wet application method.
A hair dryer or heat gun can help.

Maybe he has had a problem before?
I would go and stick a sample on and leave it for a week or so just to reasure the customer, and that way you will cover yourself.
even a written disclaimer is not the best thing, as you are "the professional" and in some ways a disclaimer could actually imply you were unsure about the suitability of the vinyl in the first place. One problem you can get though, if the paintwork has not been applied properly, then it can pull off when you remove the app tape.
so a sample will indicate if all is sound.Peter

Thanks all! will try a sample tomorrow and see what happens, will also try to find out what paint he used.

Why not try applying some heat to the lettering before application, it has worked for me on painted plywood many times. 😉

If its outside it should be gloss or enamel paint which is generally oil based anyway, if its internal it could well be anything like emulsion, vinyl silk etc, you could end up peeling it back to the wood if it wasn’t primed & undercoated first.
The suggestion above about a sample stuck to it is a wise move.
I have a plywood sign to make with vinyl stuck to it next week and the only paint I can get as a match to the window frames is a water based glossy type one, so I have a similar situation.
