if its smooth and a decent "gloss" coat. there shouldnt be any issues… none i can think of off hand anyway… mactac 3-5 and 5-7 year range would be perfectly fine to use.

are you fitting the vinyl wet or dry?

fitted dry, it seems to stick for a while and then starts to peel

sounds odd Daniel, what if anything are you using to prep the board before applying the vinyl?

You say you have used both water and oil paint.
Are you referring to Latex paint?
I can never get vinyl to stick to this well, even with a dry application.
    Especially with MacTac.
You might try heating it with a hair dryer and burnishing with a felt squeegee.
But I doubt it will help.

I would remove the vinyl, clean and sand the board, and paint it with 1-Shot lettering enamel. Wait two days, then try Oracal 751 applied dry.
You could probably varnish over this with 1-Shot speed dry UV clear to insure adhesion, but it’s not usually necessary.

Now – importantly, is it VARNISH or clear polyurethane (PU)?

Not much sticks to real varnish…and you can unfortunately get some PU clear coats that contain such oddities as Teflon (non-stick).

I’d normally just apply straight to the paint. And it probably work best with a non-‘trade’ (often a lower oil content for domestic market) type & (although it’s not required) I’ve known it to be clear coated in yacht varnish (PU) for a pick-proof & even gloss finish.

What IS required though for best adhesion is a flat surface without the grain being prominent…or it’s out with the heat gun & dabbing the softened vinyl into the grain!

Best way to coat plywood is:-

    1. 2 coats of oil based primer.
    2. 2 coats of oil based undercoat.
    3. 2 coats of top coat gloss finish.

Sand down between each coat starting with 120 grit then 180 and finally 240 grit and thin the first coat of primer about 20% with white spirit.

Paint using a 4" wool roller and switch to a foam roller for the top gloss coats.

I wouldn’t bother with varnish as this yellows after 18 months to 2 years and DO NOT use polyurethane varnish outdoors.

I use 1 Shot Sign Restoring clear and have never had any issues.

If you follow this procedure you should never have any adhesion problems.

    Hope this helps.
