    Posted by Scott.Evans on 15 October 2007 at 13:58

i have a coffee shop to kit out.
i have a design made up but i can’t really get the affect as it would look in real life.
here’s what i want to do

3mm alupanel flood coated creamy colour
    40mm stand-offs with clear acrylic.

not sure with the font yet

I know this is probably none of my business but coffee is spelt the Welsh way (coffi) but shop isn’t (siop).

The design looks good to me though! I dunno if you’ll ever get the ‘real life’ effect you want on 2d media.

    Cheers!

    I might try this:

Spell Coffee as it should be with just a capital C.

    Lose all the dots.

    Re scale SHOP.

    Use brass coloured stand-offs.

That would look lovely hand painted… give it a try with paint mask?

Would just say – use as thick a cast acrylic as you can sell / customer can afford. Apply to the reverse side for a better effect – but this can create reflection problems. Watch out for any separations / overlays in the cups.
Flame polish the acrylic edges. As already suggested, maybe lose the ‘…’ and replace them with a swirl(?) if not integral to the design and switch to brass coloured standoffs.

Overall, I think it looks pretty good & has the potential to be a pretty classy piece of work.

Had a wee play with a glass effect…just for fun.

    thanks for your comments

yes your right fred there is a light ivory panel witch i think will look grate.
the sign is also being applied on brown pvc clading

the acrylic i have in stock is 5mm do you think i should opp for the 10mm?

are my right to say that flaming the cut edges of the acrylic will leave me with a glossy edge?

i was ordering the stand-offs from lion which only have satin or chrome, where can i pick up some brass ones from? haha just found some in the fairfield catalogue.

wont applying it reverse give it a more dull finish?

just run a quick price check of the sign
i know there will be bits left over of the 8×4 sheets but my price has came out at £110

    the sign is 5ft x 3ft

are my on track with prices?

    thanks

Is that the price supply only or supplied and fitted? Mind you it doesn’t make a great deal of difference really because I honestly think it’s to cheap to start with.
What are you basing your prices on Scott? How did you reach a figure of £110.

£110? That’s not your selling price I hope?

    Treble it, at least.

At that size, 8 or 10mm acrylic would be better but I have used 5-6mm for sizes like that when budget has been limited.

This could be a very fun, hi-end upscale sign.
With a price tag to match. Your price sounds far too low.
For a flat 3×5 sign with no acrylic I would be at $350 easy.
    Love….Jill

that price was how much i could make it for!
    alupanel £38
    acyclic 5mm £70
    stand-offs £15
    vinyl £5

    £128 & vat
i was looking at charging £300 for the sign. its also alot of frosting to do on the windows and a few bits in side the shop.

too cheap for the type of sign you are trying to create.
give isp trade in mount vernon, glasgow or grafityp a call, both do stand-offs in various styles. your paying too much for them i think…
i don’t do the pricing in our place much at all and haven’t priced for acrylic in a while but i think we used to charge it out at £6 a square foot blank.
i assume you still have to price for fitting?

    quote scott evans_21:

…the acrylic i have in stock is 5mm do you think i should opp for the 10mm?

If the budget allows for it. 5mm is pretty thin stuff for this sort of job / effect.

Yes – and it will help ‘brighten’ up the whole job.

On the contrary – the surface will be a smooth, high gloss. Think of it as applying to the inside of a (NON-TINTED) window.

try pushing your final price up a bit, but obviously not too far so you lose the job. After all, this is not just a di-bond panel with a bit of clear acrylic in the front.

If this is exterior, as in ‘on the street’ (not an interior mall) I’d be putting a few more supports in. Four along the bottom edge / three up the side.
