Fonts : do you buy individually ?
Recently been doing a few very small jobs (mainly garage logo’s for the rear of their customers cars)…
I’m increasingly finding that the fonts I need (found by use of "What the font" – great tool that 😀 ) are commercial and for sale around $25 a pop – just for the single font.
Do people buy individually like this or is there anywhere you can buy a big old bundle (technical term there) and maybe include the ones you need – like if you have a choice over what ones to include ?

If the job warrants spending $25 on ONE font (ie. not a pokey livery) then the customer picks up the tab…or can supply it.
I frequently go for the ‘near enough’ option – got about 6500 installed so usually have it / or near to it.
Occasionally buying a ‘family’ of fonts is the only way especially if some crazy architect has had a go at ‘designing’. More often that not you get them to supply it.
There are a lot of genuine ‘free fonts’ sites and really cheap font’s disks in PC stores…rarely have the ‘classics’, but what do you expect for £5!

as a side note – how do you go about finding near enough matches to a font if you have 6500 to go through ? – my eyes go all over the place with just the Standard amount on X3 😮

Use WTF to identify the most likely culprits – or go with what might be right from memory…failing that… "Font ID Please" and see what George* comes up with.

thought Nick M had that title 🙄 I also have alot of fonts installed, but if it’s a special request I buy it, check out letter head font’s there are some good ones on there.

I have 8000 free fonts, but I’ve started buying them in truth.
Usually a paid font looks and feels ‘right’, but more importantly, they are not seen on every van about the place like a free font seems to be these days.
I’m a big fan of My Fonts and subscribe to their monthly newsletter to get some inspiration. http://www.myfonts.com/newsletters/rs/200710.html
I stopped buying from letterhead fonts because of their new policy that the font never sits on my hard drive.
I’ve taken some worthwhile advice from Jill too, and she has suggested a few sites that have a very good and useful range.
I don’t usually charge the client for the font, because they usually feel the font will be theirs exclusively, and go nuts if they see it again on another job. I do, however, build the cost of the font into the job.

same as Shane – I used to buy a lot of fonts from letterhead fonts and liked them but since the changes they have made i’ve had nothing but problems , tried to download a font yesterday, kept getting a corrupt file message, letterheads were very dismissive and said the problem was my end.used to be a good company but i wont be buying anymore

I agree with Shane Drew. MyFonts is a really good place to find commercial fonts. I agree with getting the newsletter that they put out for up and coming fonts. It’s a free e-mail newsletter and will keep you up to date on trends in typography. I’m partial to Adobe, Linotype and Bitstream fonts. Here is a link to the MyFonts font cd collections site.

Some sets can be expensive but do contain most of the standard classic all purpose typesetting fonts used in the professional world. Most newer custom style fonts will probably be better off bought a la carte though.
