What vinyl is suitable for a plane?
Posted by David Arch on 19 September 2007 at 21:23I need to heavily brand a plane with vinyl. Only a simple 2 colour logo but with quite a lot of coverage. It is a small 8 seater, I will have photos at the weekend but my real question is what vinyl is suitable to be used on a plane that wont come off at high speed.
Thanks Archie.

I’ve done registration numbers for a couple of planes over the years. You definitely need to use High Performance vinyl because it’s thinner and will contour to the aircraft better than other intermediate vinyls. You don’t want to add any extra "drag" to the plane.

answer to your question would be a 10 year cast vinyl.
a further note would be to check your insurance covers you to do this mine does not.
also a inspector has to check your work and sign it off as satisfactory.
there are people who specialize in this work,
thats as i understand it anyway i do do stuff for small aircraft but they come under different rules and are fitted by the inspectors.chris

I’ve done a couple of aircraft and used a 10 year cast on both, I wouldn’t think of using a lesser quality.
In both cases, as I recall, there was more concern about the legibility and the size of the text than the quality.Steve

where aircraft registrations are concerned u need to work to the CAA regulations (civil aviation authority) there website is http://www.caa.co.uk
and u will need a good cast vinyl properly applied and preferably edge sealed

Hi mate, as far as I know, only two vinyls are warranted for use on aviation applications. 3M and Avery are the only ones that have the accreditation and must be installed correctly.
Most aviation companies will tell you what the accept before you touch the plane, and they usually get you to sign an agreement for legality.
I’d certainly be ringing either company.

"Vinyl on a Plane…revenge of the applicator"
The never to be seen movie starring Robert Lambie as the tormented man who’s forced to watch as vinyl is needlessly applied wet – who can save him?
I’ll get my coat…
on a serious note, 3M does advertise that it’s suitable for aircraft given the temp ranges.

Last seen hanging on to the wings during takeoff "i want me squeege back"

Thanks for all the replies. It is only a small plane so I’m hoping its not a major problem. The budget for the job is quite big so I will recommend using the 3M ‘aviation’ vinyl. Who is the best supplier for this? I normally use amari, I’m guessing they don’t supply it but I will call to check. I’ll let everyone know what I find out.
Thanks Archie

you can get 3M and avery vinyl from Spandex neither of them are cheap, but then nothing is cheap when it comes to aircraft. If your client is not prepared to pay the price for these walk away ! Also check your insurance before signing anything !
