  • Help with light box graphics please?

Posted by Warren Beard on 18 September 2007 at 21:06

    Hi Guys

This is my first illuminated job and it is just a replacement of graphics (so it seems)

The name has changed and they want me to change the light box but I am not sure what vinyl to use. The colour scheme is red and gold and they would like me to use existing box. It looks like acrylic with a blue vinyl on it but can’t be sure until I get up there and have a close look.

Can anybody shed some light on this and give some hints and tips and advice.

    Thanks in advance

    Warren

Warren for a light box you need translucent vinyl which allows the light through but keeps the colour, mind after a second look it looks like the whole box is blue 🙄

    Hi Lynn

It is not the best picture and it was high up and in bright sun so battled to see too well.

From what I saw it looked like white/opal acrylic attached to each side as I could see a slight white gap between the face and the box edges. This is why I thought I might be able to take the panels off and apply new vinyls.

I would have to cover or paint the box edges to match.

    cheers

    Hi Warren,

Have a look in the uksbshop, 5 up from the bottom. At that price (if they are still available) it’s not worth painting or covering the existing one.

    Chris.

Don’t know if it’s an actual picture of the boxes, however, I’d imagine they are annodised finish – worth a phone call.

We typically do a reverse intaglio type of procedure for our illuminated signs. We use an easy off type of vinyl (basically used for masking) on Fiberglass. We usually paint the whole box with a transparent colored paint (that will be the color of the illuminated copy). Then we lay down the easy off lettering. Next the whole cabinet is sprayed (in this case it would be the blue). Lastly the easy off lettering is pulled up. I know that was a little long winded, but I don’t think these graphics will be easy to change just by applying different vinyl (at least what I can tell from the photo). The picture you’ve included looks like the type of illuminated sign that have the letters cut out of the material an then filled with a semi-transparent acrylic. Either way it looks like that you would have to cut the whole face off and replace with another panel (or replace the sign entirely) to change the graphics.

I would include a detail from our technical binder showing how this works, but I don’t have the ability to post a picture here. I would send a link to our site that would let you download the pdf, but I think it’s against board rules. Anyway, keep us posted on your progress. I’d like to see how it goes. 😀
