First attempt at cutting
Posted by John Macdonald on 17 September 2007 at 18:39Its only my daughters name to go on her school satchel. The first two attempts it never cut deep enough but the third time I thought I had done it and it just cut up the vynil but the letters still wouldnt weed out.
I know its early days but I am no good at reading manuals.
I have a puma sp 60

Hi John, I guess you have a speed control and a depth gauge on your machine. Do a name in say arial black about 5 inches long cut it, Then on thw cutter still see if you can week the letters out. I mean dont weed around them actually weed the letters out of the vinyl itself. If its no good set your blade along to the end of the name and increase the cutting depth and cut again. Make sure your speed is not too fast. Always change one at a time, speed first then cut if still no good then change the cutting depth. Doing it on the cutter stops wasting vinyl.
Let us know how you get on

Thanks Steve
I will give it a try tomorrow as it was my girls first day at school and i was up a five this morning.
Thanks again
hope the rest of the board are well

It’s one of those things John, that is difficult to explain but the first thing is to have the correct amount of blade exposed. (I assume your blade holder allows you to adjust this?) Then, as Steve says, it’s just a case of increasing the pressure until the cut is OK. You really only want a tiny bit of blade exposed, which if set right, will make for consistent cutting.

hi john….i think all the nutters on board are well thanks (including the sane ones) 😉
you’ll get your cutter sorted soon im sure…..and as andy and co have mentioned it’s all trial and error…give it a go with the different settings and see how you get on…..hope your wee girl’s first day at school went well 😉

Its seems to be cutting so inconsistant. It seems to get it to weed the blade has to go through the backing paper. As this is new I would not have thought it was the blade that was blunt. So much for the cut test also.
Do I really have to spend all day trying to get the adjustment right. Thanks

Not to sure of your model of cutter John, but just adjust the blade force by small amounts, a little makes a big difference on these machines.
Hope you get it sorted quickly 🙂

Cheers Neil. I have had a look at the blade and I think its blunt. It just does not look right. Will probably send the blade back to the manufacturers to see if it is dodgy. I have waited a while to get the machine so a few more days will not hurt.
Thanks again

It would be advisable to purchase a second spare blade for future use, it’s better just to do a quick change over rather than wait a few days for 1 in the post………as you can imagine they always seem to go when you have that "Big Job" on 😕

I’m not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but have you got the vinyl in the right way up?
IE cutting through the vinyl not the plastic backing.
This may not be, but you wont be the first and certainly not the last,
Guess who did it yesterday…… 😳
And Ive been doing it for years. If it cuts through to the backing that is way to much force, the backing shouldn’t be scored by the blade except very slightly.

The machine is new. I have been practising on samples of vynil that came with the package.
Will try again when I have calmed down.
Thanks

I just noticed you said backing "paper"
This satchel you are trying to get the vinyl onto, whats it made from, as if you are using sign vinyl on nylon or fabric it wont stick anyway, if you mean backing plastic then it is T shirt vinyl and will need heat pressing on.
is the satchel plastic, textile etc? -
The satchell I gave up doing as I thought the same. Just at this moment I would like to do some basic lettering and I cannot even do that at present.

Hi John
Yes it can be frustrating when you start
Where abouts are you maybe someone local can help
Good luck – John

Hi John if it’s cutting your backing paper it sounds like to much blade is sticking out of blade holder.
