Hi, this is probably a really noob question, but here goes.

I want to put LEDs in built up letters, instead of using the premade LED strips, i want to be able to use shaped strips that i put together. What material can i use as the circuit board..? I have experimented with using wiring before and it really doesnt come out well. Can you get a blank (i think its silicon composite??) board that you drill and place the LEDs into/onto?

Have you thought of using a Breadboard? I don’t know if that will solve your problem or be to bulky for you. Here’s a Wikipedia article on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breadboard There are alternative methods for making electronics listed on the bottom of the Wiki. If you are producing a large amount of one item, it might be worth it to have a printed circuit board. You could also etch your own if you are so inclined. It similar to doing Intaglio printmaking / etching.

Ok, I think I mis-understood what you were trying to do. Here is a DIY LED board a guy made with some info on how he did it. You might be able to contact that person for more info. I hope this helps some.

Thanks, taking a look at the links. I like the stripboard idea. I think getting a board printed will be hard and probably expensive to do on a small scale.

Unless you really know a lot about LEDs, I would strongly advise against making your own lighting modules. Some large manufacturers have a hard enough time making them reliable using cheap components, let alone hand made.

You have to know the best diodes to use, how do drive them, how to protect them from the elements, etc… Take my word for it (being a die-hard LED guy) – just buy something pre-made and save yourself both the headache of hand soldering, problems with an unhappy customer once your modules start failing.
