  • how do i create a shadow effect?

Posted by TimDouglas on 3 September 2007 at 19:44

Hi folks , got the job of re creating this onto this guys new van. I have done a bit of research on the boards on Shadow effects, can do a few different shadow effects but struggling with getting the gap between the layers using x3. I could change it to a way i have been able to do it but a better match would please him more as his two lorries are the same, Also he is getting the lorries resprayed to a new color scheme so if i get this correct i will get that job also.

    1. make 3 copies
    2. contour out in different colour
    3.break apart
    4. weld two together
    5. Place original back on top
    6. trim out what you don’t want
    7. both layers are beside each other
    8. No space between each?

Do i need to add a contour and keep it and delete the two welded parts ?

    Thanks Tim

Wow. Doing that sort of stuff in Corel seems like a chore when you can achieve the same thing in one click in a dedicated sign app like flexi/signlab.

I agree, its dead easy in signlab, (it does actually take more than one click though) but also fairly easy in corel or illustrator

I am no expert with corel or illustrator, but proficient users would not take long to create what is in essence, a simple effect.
sorry, that didnt answer your question Tim, but others will advise

I don’t have an answer either but a suggestion to make the drop shadow in a nice pale grey.
Black is an awful harsh color for a shadow on a white background, and black used with red can look blurry.
I also wouldn’t shadow every element, just the name.
I’d put the Home Heating part in a reverse panel and tighten up the phone number spacing.
But you are probably stuck having to match the existing vans.

that shadow was created in sl or similar not coral, due to the angle of ends.

    type text at full size
create a contour path 5 or 6 or 7 mm outside
separate new path from lettering but do not move it
duplicate new path and move to required position
trim the first path from the duplicate
    and cut it.

Corel can do block shadows, but not very well. It tends to make the shadow out of about a million parts. I’m sure they will put in some proper signmakers’ tools one day. Like version 92 or something.

Thanks everyone got it sorted, Have been able to do the top design ( Home ) still working on the second. Have also updated it a little and changed the black to light Grey to try and convince him to change. And also only shadowed the name only .

Tim, If you are using Corel buy this plug in – Sign Tools 3. It is from an Australian Company I think, download the trial. It only cost about £100 and also acts as a plotter driver from within Corel. It does all the usual shadows and stuff at the click of a mouse. http://www.asigns.com

I looked at the demo version some while ago but the shadowing part was unreliable, to be fair it was a while ago and on an old W2000 machine, patches and a newer operating system may have sorted it. I would check that it is compatible with all versions of Corel.
