Replacing pump on sp540 update
Posted by Martin Armitage on 31 August 2007 at 09:56Well I managed to replace the pump on the Versacamm, it was very straightforward and the old one had definately gone. It didn’t cure the problem though, wich was fine lines and banding through prints, mainly black. The test print shows some deflection in the black with no change after several powerful cleans. According to the engineer this means that the head has gone, so I am looking at a fairly hefty bill to get this replaced.

Tried a manual head soak yet?
Can sometimes unblock the most stubborn heads.(Assuming Versacamm same procedure as Cadet as basically the same machine)
Power off / manually wind down capping station / more head assembly to right hand side / clamp off pump lines / fill capping stations with cleaning fluid / move heads back into position / wind up capping stations (into standard position) / leave for a few hours & then run a medium clean before going for a test print.
Worth a shot if you’ve not done it already as £600 for a new head is a big one to swallow.

if you need a new head you can get one from canada for £285 plus postage £25. The ones i had delivered this week only took 7 days to arrive and that was over bank holiday. the parts are on ebay item number 280066878507

You could try the following – it is relatively straightforward and may improve the head firing:
When you got the machine it will have come with 2 x cleaning cartridges. Even after they have been used to install the machine they are normally well over half full.
Put these cartridges in the the colour(s) that you are having trouble with and perform 2 x powerful cleans. The cleaning solution should now have been pulled all the way through the head.
Put some scrap in and do some printing. Also leave the fluid in over night, and do some more printing.
The cleaning solution in the head will try and desolve any dried ink in the nozzles and chambers inside the print head.
When ready put the ink back ink and bring it back with a powerful clean or 2.
You might not recover the head completely, but whenever I have done this there has been a massive improvement in the head pattern.
Best Regards,
Mike

Mart.Just the normal fluid you swab the heads & capping stations with in general maintenance. A pipette to fill up the capping stations (1-2ml) is ideal. This type of fluid doesn’t melt plastics and I’m guessing will be nowhere near as aggressive as the ‘cleaning cartridges’…and also a LOT less costly (at £50 for the cart + lost ink) – I’m pretty sure it’s just a very thin mineral oil (as it doesn’t evaporate), but it does break down semi-hardened / gelled inks very well.
