  • New Sign Industry Exhibition for the UK in 08

Thought this may be of interest to you lot

    Tuesday, 14 August 2007
The Sign Show 2008 will be held during September 2-4, 2008 at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, UK and will hope to attract sign makers from across the UK to the inaugural event.

"The sign trade is probably one of the least represented industries when it comes to trade events. Over the past few years, we have seen numerous shows come and go—never quite hitting the nail on the head when it comes to getting the mix just right. Historically, companies specialising in large-format printing and digital signage have claimed the lion’s share of exhibition space whereas traditional sign disciplines have little or no representation," said Event Director Ed Torniainen of Link Exhibitions.

"The Sign Show has been created following extensive research undertaken by Link Exhibitions into what the sign industry really wants and the answer seems to be loud and clear: more emphasis on the practical elements of sign making and acknowledgment of every sign-related discipline regardless of its size. The Sign Show wants to help the sign maker seek out new business opportunities and offer both visitors and exhibitors an event where networking opportunities extend past the show floor. Making use of the Ricoh Arena’s multitude of assets including The Isle casino and entertainment area and the variety of conference and meeting rooms, The Sign Show 2008 will be a true celebration of our industry."

    Shane.
its been happening for a while now, in fact they have changed venues, and dates since the original idea.
I cant see how it will compete with sign uk, the organisers want to target small businesess and traditional sign makers, but tradition is catered for at letterhead meets, and small business is well represented at signuk.

    Thanks for the pointer though,
    what do others think?

Peter, we had two sign shows here (The VISA Show and The Image Show) for a few years, competing with each other, but neither was fully supported by the bulk of the industry.

They to finish up combining the shows so as we had one big one – The VISA and Image Show, and that has good support now. Sydneys Show was considered a failure this year because we had 3 similar shows in as many months – The Gold Coast VISA/Image Show, Printex07 (Screen and Digital) and Sydney VISA/Image Show.

People were ‘shopped out’ by the time Sydney came around.

I’d be surprised if another show would be helpful to the industry, but from an exhibitors point of view, if the price for a display was better, they might be swayed to give it a try, if Sign UK was not as popular as they’d expected it to be. The venue would be a consideration too.

May make signuk rethink a few things, and be a better show than last year as a result?

I’d be interested to hear from a suppliers perspective. Without their involvement it will not happen.

I would be interested to hear other folks views on this… anyone given it any thought?

Do you think that there is a need for another show?

Any suppliers out there willing to give their views?

From my point of view, the only reason for another sign show is an excuse for a party. But that’s fine for me because both the NEC and Coventry are less than an our away. Not so good for those living further away.

From a suppliers aspect, I can’t see them getting wildly enthusiatic about the costs involved in another show, and will only attend if they can see a positive benefit. Unlikely I would have thought.

That’s assuming your sat-nav system doesn’t send you off on a wild goose chase so you end up somewhere else entirely 😕

maybe changing me phone to the satnav version… so look out all!

I have to say Phil that Warren had his sat nav in his pocket (well I believe that was what it was 😉 )

I should think this show will end up pretty much the same as SignUK (if they are lucky!). I know there is some talk on other forums that people want a show that is more geared towards practical demonstrations, but the fact is that exhibiting is bloody expensive and anyone who exhibits needs to sell products. I don’t know what the point of this show is. I’d probably have a look but I reckon it would take a few years for it to become established.

I don’t know or understand the politics of what would be involved but I would like to see Sign UK change it’s venue every year…..go on a 4 year cycle of maybe Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle & Glasgow for example

I don’t know if the NEC have got any rights to the event but I’m sure the suppliers would benefit from making it a bit more accessible to to the rest of the UK

Intersting point Glenn, but I think you’d need to put London in the mix for our more southerly colleagues.

Just joking mate… i think its actually a pretty good idea though i think you wouldn’t have a consistent amount of visitors due to some of the locations.
i think the reason it is Birmingham and in this case Coventry is because of how central the venue is over the populated areas for signmakers and suppliers. (see image i have attached, taken from the sign show site)

you know that map looks pretty accurate in my part, my suppliers look about right too, although I think there is one north of us.

Interesting to see the spread of sign makers

    Well said John,

Bloody Northerners, there are some of us below Brum Glenn 😀 😀

Just seen the map, looks like most of us are below, no wonder it’s so quiet 😕

Any way looks like I’ll be moving and setting up in Southern Ireland,
doesn’t look much in the way of competition there,

According to the map there are only about a dozen in South Wales!

No chance of it coming to Cardiff after all then.

I’m (pleasantly) surprised that the Bristol(ish) area is hugely populated with blue pegs though.

Glad to see that some of your are making plans to attend in September.
Do get in touch with me if you have any questions regarding the show. We hope that we have created an event that appeals to everybody and to this end we welcome any feedback or comments.
As this is our first year we understand that we have to work especially hard to create a show that sign makers feel is worthwhile.
I look forward to seeing you there. I will be located in the press area throughout the duration of the event, so please drop by.
And for those staying over I look forward to enjoying a drink with you at the awards or in The Isle.

Well I’ve searched the sign show web site and I still can’t find the actual address and postcode of the Ricoh Arena for my sat-nav.
So I emailed the organisers via the contact page on the site.

    Nothing!

I’d better hope for a large arrow in the sky pointing to it as there’s one shown on Google Maps! 😕

  • Erika Williams

Unfortunately there is no large arrow.
The address for the Ricoh however is
    Ricoh Arena
    71 Phoenix Way
    Foleshill
    Coventry
    CV6 6GE

I’ll get this added to our website this afternoon
Any more queries please let me know.

The post code of Coventry City FC is CV6 6GE.

Junction 3 of the M6, left if traveling from the south, right if you are coming from the north. Can’t miss it!

    Cheers for that.
Once I registered the address was shown on the confirmation.
I did find it odd that such a heavily promoted show didn’t actually tell you the address from the start.

It would certainly help. you spend so much time on the complicated things, that you over look the most simple.
Thanks for pointing it out, it would certainly be a waste of time if people didn’t know where they were going.
I can’t guarantee that any of the Coventry FC boys will be there though.
From any motorway there are AA signs to follow so hopefully you won’t have any difficulties finding us.
