  • Grenadier vs JV3? which is better and most reliable?

Posted by Stephen Brown on 17 August 2007 at 13:12

I’m looking at buying either a Grenadier or a JV3, I’m currently using a Grenadier but have good things about the JV3.
The grenadier has had its problems (minor) especially with slight banding on the 8 pass printing. But overall its been a good machine.

has anybody out there used both and able to give a fair comparison?

Print quality/speed/reliability/ink fading are all issues that concern me.

well i have had mine for 3 years… excellent machine, really pleased with our jv3. well designed and is one of the best machine designs for a long while, lots of people will tell you that. the grenadier is also a good machine but i have not had the experience it first hand.

i think overall you will some kind of banding with any solvent printer over time, it will not print perfect every time.

As Dave, I only have first hand experience with a JV3 but whilst I hear good things about the Grenadier, the engineer that installed our JV3 reckons whilst he has very few call outs to JV3’s he can rebuild a Grenadier blindfolded though don’t take that as gospel.

Is there a bulk ink system for the JV3 and if so can you get the inks at a good price, Im getting grenadier 1 litre bottles for £95 at the mo. I only see 440ml cartridges for the JV3 at about £74.
I know you cant say where and who from, but are they available and roughly what price?

well that seems to be the typical pricing for bulk ink, I am looking at that at the moment to be honest. ITL and Sun inks are two I am looking at.

Ordering the system with bulk might be okay, just make sure you get plenty of training on the system and the way it works.

My JV3 had about 5 sessions in 3 years of problems… all resolved now.

other than the usual niggling gripes you get with "any printer", i cannot fault our grenadier. we have had ours over 3 and a half years now…

for me, it was a toss up between the mimaki and the grenadier but i went with the grenadier because the mimaki didn’t offer on-board cutting facilities.
today, the mimaki comes partnered with a cutter… i know the usual augments on this setup, but if i had the same choice today ide still go with the grenadier.

no disrespect, but i feel that 9/10 banding and print quality problems come down to operator inexperience. i do not say that meaning i am some sort of expert on the matter, im not, far from it actually… its just there are so many reasons for getting poor print quality we always jump to the conclusion its the machine at fault.
