    Newbie alert!!

As explained to Robert Lambie when I applied to join the site and pay my membership, I am shortly being made redundant after 18 years, and am seriously considering to use the money to enter the signmaking world. I already have web design experience and am well versed in Corel Draw 3 to 11.

As I do not yet have either vinyl cutting, printing nor laminating equipment, (as old job not finished yet and no cheque yet!), I thought that whilst waiting, I would use this time to start practising some techniques.

For me, as I’m a sucker for punishment, I thought I would start out with some panels like the bonnet and glass of my blown engine 535i in the driveway, as it’s there going nowhere and doing nothing, as if I can learn how vinyl feels applying dry on that, I’d have good grounding for applying to softer targets.

    Noob questions would therefore be:

    1. The Oracal 870 seems to be their premium cast cast vehicle film, but is very expensive compared to the 751C and is rarely talked about here compared to the other cast products. Why is this 70 micron film so out of favour compared to the 55 micron 751C, and will the extra thickness cover a cars original colour better, eg white vinyl over a black or silver vehicle?

    2. If I am learning to apply dry and with the hinge techniques I have read about and seen on the video demonstations my membership allowed me access to, if the vinyl is "raw" and unprinted, can I just apply it like that or do I have to have it laminated anyway?

    3. What is the main difference between the 50micron Oracal 851 and the 55 micron Oracal 751c? (Don’t say 5 micron! lol)

    Thankyou,

    Ivan

    quickie reply…

1, I expect most folk here use or have used calander vinyl like oracal 651, 551 till now. being a UKSG member meant that they can buy the 751 cast (which is a better quality of vinyl) at the same price if not lower than some calender vinyls on the market.

2, unprinted vinyl does not need lamination and can be applied as it is. however, it is better to apply it with application tape as it helps prevent stretching of the vinyl and makes the application much more manageable.

    3, i think oracal 851 is a 10 year cast, but oracal 751c is an 8 year cast… i only use the 851 on the odd occasion…
Both are quality vinyls with similar characteristics but 851 will have better UV stability, and probably less shrinkage. (not that there is much, if any with these casts)
