  • what is banner material like?

Posted by Angelique Muller on 3 August 2007 at 09:43

I have never seen banner material (the one you print on) up close, but I was wondering what it is like? Could you compare it to oil cloth or vinyl like the tablecloths etc.?
Reason I am asking is that I would be interested using it for a different purpose…..
So can you use it a bit like fabric, and make things like bags out of it? Would it be strong enough for upholstery?

the normal banner material is similair to the stuff used on truck curtains.
the print banner is similar also but usually thinner.

Give trounce a call, they will send you a swatch and sample banner

Like Peter says try contacting some of the banner suppliers and they will send you out samples.
Banner material comes in different weights (thicknesses) so by getting some samples you may be able to find something suitable. You will probably need an industrial sewing machine though if you want to try and make bags or something similar.
Don’t have details but a google search should give you some options.
Trounce, Boldscan, general banner. There are 3 names to start you off.

thank you all for your comments…..
Before I start collecting samples.. can I re-phrase my question into:
Could printed banner material in your opinion be used for other purposes like upholstery or bags?

    Thanks again 😀

Angelique, OK I am not an expert on this sort of thing but if you are just looking for peoples thoughts then I would say that as far as upholstery is concerned it will probably depend on what sort of upholstery, banner material is a plastic so for things like seat covers people may not feel comfortable sitting on it, it may make you sweat a bit and there may also be a chance of the inks coming out on peoples clothing depending on how it was done.
For stuff like garden furniture to protect it and other things like table cloths etc it should be fine. You can already buy all sorts of covers that are made with similar sorts of materials but most of them are mass produced so competing price wise may be a problem unless you are looking at providing custom made covers which is a different sort of market.

I believe you can also buy shoulder type bags that are made with a similar material as well but once again these are normally mass produced so you would have to manufacture custom made bags to be able to sell them and make some money.

thank you thank you thank you

That was the kind of info I was looking for….
I tell you why I was asking:
I recently made myself a handbag out of oilcloth with a photographic printed ‘pebbles’ design… I got some great reactions, which made me think: I thought it could be fun making personal or one-off bags with a printed material…. some women spend fortunes on mass-produced handbags (well not me… i make my own…), so maybe there is a market for one-off personalised bags?!?! But before I could even think of any specific design, I would have to deal with the practicalities of the materials. things like inks coming out…. that would not be great….

I am not looking to make millions…. it’s just a little project that would keep me occupied and have fun at the same time…

Using it for upholstery is for something among the same line of thought…….

    Angelique:

I agree with previous posts that your best approach would be to get some banner samples. Yes, you could make bags and other products from banner material but generally speaking there are less expensive types of vinyls that do not need banner vinyl’s properties of accepting inks or vinyl lettering. Vinyl material is not typically used in upholstery because its inflexibility makes it awkward to turn corners and stretch around foam or cushions, and it tends to be hot and sticky to human contact because it does breathe or move.
A more typical use of vinyl would be athletic equipment covers like mats and equipment bags or as someone else mentioned truck and storage covers.

So I suppose rather than looking at banner material I should look for a fabric you can print on….. I just fancy making some products with photographic images on them….. The idea started at oil cloth… so vinyl -in my mind- was the next closest thing….
I sort of wander if the texture of fabric would interfere with a photograph… that it looses clarity?!?! 🙄 Sorry just thinking out loud…..

Ever thought of printing onto canvas for bags?

With a textile printer you would be able to print onto all sorts of different fabrics and get some very good results, don’t know if anyone on the boards has a textile printer but it might be worth asking.

Get a dye sub set up and you can print full colour onto ANYTHING made from more than 65% polyester.
or there are ready made bags available from various dye sub suppliers I have used them and theyre not cheap but look good so you can charge a premium price as they are unique
I sometimes print onto shiny polyester satin, its so good to print onto its comes out like high quality photo paper.
    Costs about £4 a linear metre (1m x 2m I think) from haberdasheries

Now that sounds like a good idea!! 😀 What about durability? Could you wash it?
