  • Epson D88. Colours printing too dark when printing photos.

Posted by Earl Smith on 26 July 2007 at 19:38

I have just started sublimation printing using an Epson D88. When printing using Epson ink cartridges the photos are perfect. Now I have installed a bulk feed system, bought from y-o-w.com , and using Gronal inks. The photoes come out very dark and the colour balance is wrong. I have asked the supplier for an ICC colour profil and have been told that there is not one for these inks. The program I use is Coral Draw12. I just import straight from my camera into Coral and then to the printer after resizing. I dont understand colour profiles or how to "tune" the program to the printer. What am I doing wrong???? Can anybody help???

If you don’t have a profile then basically you have little to no chance of successful sublimation printing, all I can suggest is setting the paper type to "plain paper" (as with all sublimation paper) and download a profile from one of the subli companies like revolution transfers etc, they should at least be a bit closer than what you have now, because trust me if your profile isnt right nothing will come out good.

Thanks for the quick replies. In answer to the first, Yes I know the colours change for the better when I print them. Graphics from the computer come out better than imported photos. The ink I am using is from Gronal and the manufacturers name, Manoukian, comes up on the internet site where I buy from ( y-o-w.com) but not on the bottle. Maybe this is a cheap version of their ink and they dont want their name on the product. I doubt it though as many very reputable companies sell this ink here in Germany. I am told however that there is no colour profile for this ink, …..I am chasing the supplier for a colour profile. If the ink is any good they should have one. I have opted for the D88 because I had one and it is portable. I am selling Mugs ( or trying to ) printed with photos at fairs and shows around the north of Germany. Thats why it is portable. I want to test the sellability of this idea before I invest in a more expensive and probably less portable printing system.
Ok now some more questions. Remember please that I am a novice and all is new to me. I do know that inks from different sources act differently together and that you do not mix inks from different companies.
The printer , D88, prints with CMYK. Some companies give a RGB profile for CMYK inks. ( Or am I wrong?).
I am using Coral 12 and Micrografx, Picture Pulisher 7 . What are the steps that I should take to produce a reasonable print? Do I need to import the photos into these programs and then convert them to CMYK or RGB? Then what should I do next? I told you I am a novice.
If you have time to answer with a step by step , what I should do answer I will be very appreciative and it will help me get my business started.
Meanwhile, thanks again for the previous replies….

As far as Im aware manoukian ink is only for wide format printers IE mimaki JV3 and Versacamm etc,
I looked into it as it was cheap but found I couldnt use it as its not designed for inkjet printers.
    maybe thats the problem.
