Price it Guide
Posted by Ian Higgins on 3 July 2007 at 16:12Hi Folks,
After a reminder e-mail I finally received my free copy of the Price It Guide.
My first impression is that it is pretty good! I know we all have different overheads etc. but I think if used as it suggests as"a guide"then I think it is pretty effective.
I know there were concerns about the general public seeing it but to be honest I would be more than happy to let my customers see a copy as I think it explains the basics such as simple design, complex and full colour pretty well.
Would be interested to hear others comments on it.
For the next couple of weeks I will be using it alongside my existing pricing just to see how it compares.
Cheers

Yeah, I agree. I think it’s pretty handy, but like you say, it’s just a guide. For me though being relatively new to this game it’s good for double checking your usual pricing against. Also handy if you need to price for something you wouldn’t usually do, i.e. I don’t have a printer and sub anything out that I get, but it’s handy to know roughly what the prices might be.
-
hmmm i don’t know… i like the idea of it and i appreciate the work that the guy behind it has done, but i just think perhaps the newbies to the trade will be the ones who find it most beneficial.
i don’t remember exactly what was in it now but i sat having a look at it at signuk with Joe McNamara and in the few minutes i glanced over it i found flows in some areas. i do not say that disrespectfully, i just mean there are some pricing guides they have in it that needs much more taken into account before you can give a "rough price".
i think the benefit from newbies to the trade using is it is that this may help them stop devaluing their work as this is a common mistake when getting into the sign game. -

Where can i get hold of a copy of this guide? i remember filling something in ages ago to receive a copy but never got one so far.
any help much appreciated.

I think some of the van pricing is way out. LWB sprinter with a digital print filling every panel on the side and rear and vinyl lettering filling every other available space for about £395!

Got mine in the post today.
Will be really handy to throw Gareth out the door with it for on-site ‘guesstimates’ when I’m in the unit.
Flicked through it & just applied a percentage up or down on the lists or rewrote a few columns.
Like Robert said – it’s a really good guide for newbies – until you figure out your own pricing structure, but in essence – a good idea & well executed.

I had actually forgotten all about this. Contacted them when the post first appeared and still haven’t heard from them. Has anyone actually been successful in obtaining a copy by emailing them?
-
I only found out a couple of days ago from a post Dave made. I signed up online expecting a confirmation e-mail, but nothing…….Ill just wait it out for a while.
-
Graeme, hope you have more luck than me, I should have followed it up really but I emailed them after reading another post that someone made just after Sign UK. If I had gone to the show and given them my details there then maybe I would have received a copy by now. Maybe they got more interest than they expected from the show and are trying to catch up but they could have at least sent me an email to let me know what was happening.
-
Ive been on the website, and am now feeling the response was better than he expected. Its a guide paid for by the adverts and has probably run out of advertising revenue to print more…..only my humble guess though. If someone wants to offer up a copy Id gladly pay reproduction and postage costs……..Any takers?

I did eventually receive mine, mention you are a member on this forum, I did and got it 2 days later
It might work for you too 😉
cheers

Thats funny, so did I.
They also lost the previous 4 emails I sent through their website too 😉
Got it 2 days after same as warren. -
I have requested 5 times plus at the show. Still nothing. 😕

I have a couple of them but I got about 10 at the initial launch from Paul, and have given most of them away to other sign people!
I’ll give paul a call to see if it’s OK to scan one and post it for members to download if that helps.
Cheers

Trouble is…..
it’s probably already out of date… I have one, not really a definitive guide, to many anomalies (just my opinion)
You are better off working out your own prices, to suit your own circumstances.
So I wouldn’t worry too much if you cant get a copy.Peter
-
After reading the guide totally Agree with Peter above.
Its ok as a guide but your own prices are the ones you should go by. -
Of course you should go by your own prices – but the price it guide is an excellent benchmark.
-
I found a lot of it depends on area, my prices were quite comparative with the guide, a bit higher/lower in some parts but for most of it not too far off.
A lot will depend on area, there’s not many of us about down here but in a city with hundreds of signmakers it gets a bit cut throat I bet. -
Peter, although I would agree with you that it is important to work out my own pricing depending on my own circumstances it would be nice to have a copy just as some sort of rough guide and also just out of interest. As Phill has said gives you some sort of benchmark.
-
quote Phill:Of course you should go by your own prices – but the price it guide is an excellent benchmark.
I find in general it just multiplies material costs by various factors
😉I always have it on my bench, then I know where my bench is
Peter
sorry
Being flipant again

More serious though
in the guide it says for artworkArtwork. £25 PH
Logo design £30 PH
reproducing customer logo £24.25 PHis there a difference?
it all involves using whatever program, and your brain….Peter
-
has the data been collected from say 10 sign makers throughout the country and then an average price assumed? i don’t have the guide.
-
As I understand it Peter – these are "average figures" based on canvassing a number of sign businesses. I spoke to Paul at some length at the sign show and believe he is sincere in what he is doing – and that it is a worthwhile exercise. If anything – I think he should sell his pricing guide for a modest fee – and not just rely on advertising revenue.
-
Yes Phil,
Paul is sincere, and good on him for taking the time and effort to produce the guide,
But I wouldn’t pay for it, unless it was much more definitive, and up to date.
The amount off work to produce a publication that is worthwhile is immense, and if you could liken it to "glasses guide" and compare the amount of data required to make it comprehensive, it would take a team of people working full time.OK its a guide, but although it may help some people, it may mislead others, as to the price of signage.
Paul does explain all this in his introduction, and says that prices can vary substantially,
so yes use with care, but dont use as a bible
Peter

Not got a copy yet, but Paul sent me a questionnaire to fill in regarding my prices as he had not received many examples from Scotland. This was after the first ones came out so I presume he will be updating it as more info comes in.
Cheers
Dave
