  • how can i see just image area with vehicle outlines please?

Posted by mediakliq on 1 June 2007 at 22:52

I work out of photoshop for just about every thing…But recently I hadto use illustrator for the vehicle outlines to create a wrap…My question is is there a way to apply an image to an area that has been selected….so that it only shows in that area and not overlap for example the wheels or any areas outside that selection…..Would be a great help…..I usually use 3d max to render 3d wraps for presentation images….

    Thanks

Firstly, put the image on a separate layer. Make the vehicles lines with a stroke, but no fill. Place the image layer behind the van outline layer. Then you will have all the vehicles features, wheels, door handles etc obscuring the image.

If the image is bigger than the van, make a copy of the outline of the van, that’s just the perimeter and none of the features, and copy it onto your image layer, in front of the image. Select both the image and the van outline and select "crop" Then any part of the image which falls off the edge of the vehicle disappears.

I don’t know which vehicle outline library you are using, so this is for Impact, although others are likely to be similar.

Apart from the body lines, the drawings have a line going around the complete perimeter of the vehicle. That’s there so that we can change the body colour of the van quickly. What you need to do is to select that line and go to the colour palette in Illustrator. You will find that the line is given a stroke already and all you have to do is make sure that it has no fill.

Copy and paste work in exactly the same way as they do in Photoshop. I’m a Mac man so I don’t know the PC shortcut, but with that perimeter line selected go to the edit menu and choose "copy".

Then select the layer with your image, edit menu again, and select "paste".

That will give you a copy of the vehicle perimeter on top of your image. Select both the perimeter line and the image, edit menu again and select "crop". Then only the part of the image that falls within the vehicle outline is visible.

Keep both items selected and move them over so that they line up directly over the top of the original vehicle outline, and job done.

    OK?

yes in photoshop its called a layer mask and in illustrator you want to create a clipping mask. this will block out the design from running out of the outline and onto the windows, tires, etc.
