Can anyone offer advice with this?

The customer wants a blackboard that can hang in the center of a take away window.
Probably around 2 by 3 foot.
Its so he can change his special offers periodically with liquid chalk or something similar.
I keep thinking of those plastic suction cup things with a chain holding the board that can be turned round to write on then turned back to display. 😕
I mentioned it and he likes the idea so I have to try and come up with something.
Anyone know if and where I could get a system that would be strong enough?

Did some tests recently with liquid chalk pens, found they worked best on normal black vinyl. NOT blackboard vinyl, and not dry-wipe vinyl.

    tks

I just read the thread you posted in back in November Alistair.

Do you reckon i could just flood coat some plastic board with 651 glossy finish to get a decent result.

I don’t know what others think ?, but I found black gloss worked best, and it was 651 I used too. So yeah, i think you could just flood coat.

James, the weight of the board and the chains might be a bit much for a couple of plastic suction cups, I would be inclined just to fit a couple of hooks for the chain to hang from. As for board I have used Black Acrylic for a lot of pubs which works well but that would obviously make it more expensive. Have to be honest I haven’t tried covering a bit of foam with black vinyl so don’t know how it would work. Not sure if it would stay flat though, covered with black vinyl it is going to generate a lot of heat, especially if hanging in the window. OK it will be able to expand without any problems but if the vinyl expands at a different rate I’m not sure if it would warp it.
You will probably find that foam is OK and I am thinking about this far to much :lol1:

James check out http://www.pinetree-enterprises.co.uk they have some hanging things that may be an idea of how to fix the board.

    Cheers

I haven’t worked with acrylic yet Martin, perhaps I should concentrate on which liquid chalk and then test it on various things. Is it expensive the acrylic?

Lynn, the same customer has also been asking about hanging glass displays, uncanny, tks! 😀

James Acrylic is obviously a lot more expensive than foam and you will probably have to buy a half sheet which is more than you will need for this job. I always use to have a few odd bits in stock as I have done a few pubs using 3mm black acrylic. Check the Europoint price for 3mm coloured acrylic to give yourself a better idea.
Not sure off the top of my head what sort of pens they use but can probably find out. If it’s a takeaway and the guy is looking for cheap then foam would be a cheaper option but you could always offer two optons with two different prices.

There should be no probs with foam. It will warp when screwed in place to tightly but flood coating will not be enough to stop it expanding and contracting as much as it likes. Also a lot lighter so should help with fitting.
