these things are a nightmare, i refuse to use them.
yes they do work but so temperamental ill not use them.
when removing most, you are required to click an icon and be prompted with "now safe to remove" not everybody does this because allot of the time it does not effect it. but then comes the big job that’s been backed up onto it and pop goes the memory stick.

i bought one a while back, cost me £50 used it once and it never worked. took it back to shop, given another and told about the safe removal process. two days later same happens again. even though i followed the removal procedure exactly.
so i just stopped using them…
since then i have had at least 6 customers tell me the same or in fact arrive at our work, put the stick in and its not found. return later to say it knackered and give me it on a disk.

    Is it mac compatible,

I know everything now on OSX is, but you are using an old OS it might not support a windows formatted memory stick.

As for memory sticks being a nightmare I disagree, best invention for a PC. A hard-drive you can put in your pocket or on your keyring instead of carrying around cd cases or disc boxes.

Plus no need to wait for the damn thing to burn, just drop and go.

    Cheers Stephen

i think i have burned about 20 cd’s/dvds in my life stephen. each of my comps have large backup drives, with large back up drives for the back-ups. 😀 i then have an external drive with the same backed onto that. the external drive is about the same size of an A5 sheet and about 1inch thick. if i cannot email or ftp a file due to size, ill take my external drive with me. i did that at signuk this year actually… took everything in case anything went wrong so i could have it printed at the show.

i guess its back to every ones own view on the things, i just think they are too temperamental for my liking and that’s based on my own experience and the embarrassment of various customers i have had over the past year of so.

like you my younger brother swears by them, and does lots of work on his mac laptop with his. but… i also know his broke once also. 😕

Some of the problems on windows with memory sticks not being found are windows trying to assign a drive letter already in use.

If you right click my computer and go down to manage then disc management you can assign a new drive letter to it.
If it doesn’t show there then the computer most likely hasn’t recognised it for some reason.

Not much help with a Mac though, sorry.

You need to make sure that the USB Mass Storage Device extension is installed. If you upgrade to 9.2.1, then I think this is installed automatically.
Otherwise, if you do a search on Apple’s support site, I believe it’s available
as a standalone installer. Also need to make sure that your Mac is set up to read PC discs in case the drive is formatted for PC.

….or upgrade to OSX, which will do all of the above.

    Cheers,
    Jamie.

Not sure if you’ve tried this, but I believe the old Mac system (9.1) didn’t allow external devices to be ‘hot-swappable’ (installed and removed while the computer was running).

Try putting the memory stick in the slot and the restarting the Mac. It should then appear on the desktop.

If it’s a gig stick, it wont work on 9.1. I’ve had the same infuriating problem. Highest I’ve dared to use on 9.1 is a 256MB stick & that’s been fine for over 2 years now.

If I need a file any bigger than 750MB (very rare) I use a DVD & burn it with my Lacie re-writer via the firewire port (again, only way using 9.1)

Running 9.1 is it nightmare, but my various dongles & adapters refuse to work with OSX, so I’m stuck with it. Slowly learning Flexi on the PC, but it’s hard work.

There will come a time when the whole shebang comes grinding to a halt. I can’t wait! 😕

    Cheers,

    Gwaredd.
