why is my monitor picture shrinking on all sides?
Posted by Michael Potter on 9 May 2007 at 03:00Sorry if this is the wrong place to put this. My monitor picture has suddenly started to shrink in size on all sides, everything is there it’s just smaller.
Then low & behold it all went back to filling the screen, now today we are back to shrinking again?
Since the operator is a bit of a dummy I don’t know what is happening.
Many Thanks

Your (FBT) Flyback transformer is about to go belly up I’d hazard a guess Mike.
Is it an older CRT monitor? Probably cheaper to buy a new LCD screen, than repair it. It could be a dry solder joint too, but they are like trying to find a needle in a haystack for most monitors, unless it is a known problem with the monitor brand, and the techs can go straight to it..
If you want a new LCD, I can ring my wholesalers and see what I can get you one for at cost if you like.
Let me know.
Cheers

hi Shane
If you could get a price that would be great.
Thanks Mike -
I think with a TV that if the supply voltage drops the screen gets smaller? is that the same with a monitor?
Nick.

but banging it makes it come back to size ? sure it’s not a dry-joint?
LCD time Michael, you wont look back, trust me.

Thanks all
In desperation I tried the banging all to no avail.
went out to do a quote and came back about 2 hours later everything was back to normal.
or at least what used to be normal -

or at least what used to be normalComing back after banging would indicate a dry solder, but your description is typical of an FBT getting old…
I’ve put the call in mate, but they didn’t get back before I left. They may have a fax on my desk in the morning

This would be the electronics within the monitor, and there can be several possible causes. Whoever does the refurbishing for that model would know what components would most likely fail. Power supply could be the cause, though I’d wager some electrolytic capacitors on the main deflection board.
Note that newer monitors typically use surface-mount electronics. Without the proper equipment, it’ll be a bugger to fix the board yourself. You need the help of a repair crew that specializes with that model.
Like Shane says, probably time to obtain a new screen. However, might be worthwhile to repair the old monitor and then donate to a not-for-profit, rather than bin the thing.

Rod
