why is my flushed mutoh not printing the same?
Posted by Richard Peirce on 19 April 2007 at 16:29I flushed my Mutoh Rocky 1 with eco-solvent plus cleaning fluid and now when using the Ultra’s the inks don’t all print at the start of printing, but then do after a few mm’s. Could it be blocked somewhere or have i damaged the printer by using the eco-solvent plus cleaning fluid when I’ve been using Ultra inks? I’ve had the upgrade a few months now.

whats the test print showing, you was suppose to be able to use Plus & Ultra inks together so using the solvent should not have been a problem. However may be you have washed some sludge up into the dampers, Have you ever changed the dampers, whats the age of the machine, what was the reason for doing the cleanKev

test print has lines/banding in blue more than anything.
Not sure what the dampers are, can you explain? Don’t know if I’ve changed them or not.
Machine is about 18months old
Did a flush as never done one since new, thought it could do with one.
Just done a nozzle check and its all over the place!!!

What inks are you using?
what could have happened is that sediment from the tubes/circuit have moved from there to your dampers or print head after flushing the system, try changing your dampers (your machine supplier should have those and can explain how to change them, is not that hard) and doing a few cleaning cycles.
was the defect before the flushing there already, and has been aggravated after it? -

no need to flush unless you are having problems, sounds like the cleaning cycle is struggling to clear the heads, have you done a powerful clean via the menu. Dampers are the reservoir tanks that mount onto the top of the heads. These have little filters in them to trap any large pigment dirt etc in the ink. Have you confirmed with any of the ink suppliers re using the plus cleaner with ultra inks, i don’t think it should have caused a problem. My next step would be to get a syringe, Remove the right hand end cap & separate the drain tubes at there joint. Fix the syringe to the pipe end running up to the capping station, lift the lid & push the heads all the way home. Draw back the syringe keeping a steady pressure until the ink flows stop pulling on the syringe & release the heads now repeat on the second tube. Please only undertake this operation if you are confident in doing so only you know your capabilities & please ensure the machine is switched off. Do a quick clean then a test print & hopefully you will be up & running. Dampers are easy to change they sit on the heads by push fit & the pipe fits the by a small nut union fitting.
Before doing any of the above did you have the fault before you did the clean?Kev

the piezo on the heads are blocked…. just change them and you will sort it
had same problem??
if only one the head with black cyan & l cyan or blue just change that one….
very good machines but you do have to look after them ( a Lot )cheers

you don’t have to change them just because they block, that is the final step if they wont clear. Heads on my Roland are £600 if i changed them due to them blocking i would be skint.Kev

HI KEVIN
HEADS ON THE ROLAND ARE EXPENSIVE I KNOW I HAVE ONE!!!!
BUT FOR THE ROCKY 1 THEY ARE ONLY £120 FOR BOTH HEADS
IT WAS A EASY OPTION AND IT WORKS FOR A LOW PRICE CLEANING OF HEADS SOMETIMES WORKS BUT SOMETIMES DOES NOT I HAVE FOUND THAT MOST OF THE PROBLEMS ARE HEAD RELATED ON MY ROCKY DUE TO INK BLOCKAGE…….

if you are having problems of heads blocking too often then the seals on the capping station are not sealing. I ran a Rocky 38 for 2.5 years on the same set of heads & the present owner is still running it on the same heads. I ran both Eco + and ultra inks with very few problems of clogging.Kev

cheers for the replies guys. I had a problem before in that sometimes i’d get runs on the areas i really didn’t want them, ink leaking in fact. that was pretty much it. I’ve since managed to get some stuff printing ok, but at the start of each print job the colours aren’t quite right. Its only after a few mm it goes how it should. This is ok when printing labels, but on bigger stuff its a right royal pain! I’ll look into the dampers issue and see what the supplier says.

sounds like the inks are mixing in the capping station & siphoning back up,
the sponges swell & allow cross contamination, fit a new capping station without the pump its not expensive & it should cure your problem. Post a pic up next time you get ink running on to the print & may be we can come up with a solution. Capping stations only have a suggested life span of 6 months to a year. Have you changed the wipers, again distorted wipers can cause ink runs/drops etc.Kev
