  • which vinyl can be applied to a sail?

I’ve been asked for a large vinyl sign to fix on a Sail

I can’t imagine there is such a thing – would have to resist sea water and regular rolling up and down

    Anybody have a solution?

John, I would imagine it would depend on what sort of material the sail was made from as I know they can be made from different materials. i would have thought Peters suggestion about screen printing would be best or maybe use a mask and screen inks. Some of the heat transfer vinyls for garments might also be suitable but obviously a supplier would be more informed about that.

    Good luck with it anyway.

I would think screen print would be the best option. There are digital print spinnaker cloths out there but then you need a sailmaker to turn the printed item into a sail.

For a normal main sail or genoa/jib I think screen would be the best option, or you could try truck vinyl from apa as it puts up with a lot of grief and does stick like the smelly stuff to a blanket.

John, there is a computer cut material here that most sail makers can supply if you ask for it. We used to cut race numbers and advertising all the time with it. It is like a very course banner vinyl. Have not done it for years, and we only ever got it from sail makers, not sure where they got it from though.

Short answer is, yes there was a material available, and probably still is, you just have to know who to ask. I’d start with a sail maker though as a start. 😛

Hi John. I am from a small boat town with lots of marinas so do lots of boat names etc. If they are producing one or two only, the sail company sews the pieces together using their sail material in the different colours. I provide them stencils or templates either penned on paper or vinyl cut out and they cut their stuff out using the template, and sew it all together. Most sails are made of heavy nylon. If there is a number of the same layout, they would have to be screened. If it is one of, it is custom sewn like I said. Get in touch with the sail company and go from there. Hope it helps.

Hi John, yep there is a special material think it is called Dacron I have tested it on my cutter, quite heavy to cut put it does.

I also applied numbers to a sail using banner vinyl, this was for one race but they are still there after a year.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction where to buy (in the UK) self adhesive Insignia Adhesive Material in rolls?
Need to cut and apply to a existing sail.
    Thanks.

Did some test cuts and this will work. Just need to locate these in the Europe. Otherwise must order from USA
