  • plottor or computer problem ?

Posted by Brian Little on 2 March 2007 at 20:31

hi folks Ive had this problem lately dont know whats causing it .Some times the plotter just stops ….fan still running …but i notice the bytes being sent to the cutter have stopped . Now has the plotter stopped because the bytes are not being sent ?or is it the other way around .Theres a number of ways i can temporally solve the problem ….ive either rebooted the comp …or ive welded the tex to make it a graphic or ive used the spooling facility . its a roland cutter

    Regards Brian

hey mate. The plotter will stop when the bytes are not being sent. It will just sit an wait till it gets some more data.

The plotter, when it has finished, will go back to the xy co-ordinates that you’ve told it in your cutting software. If it is not getting that data, it will stop at the spot that the data stopped coming.

At a guess, I’d say you need to defrag your hard drive….. You’ve probably got a corrupt file sitting there somewhere.

Does it happen consistently? or just every now and then? The fact that it works after a reboot indicates a corrupt segment on your drive. The spooling facility will write to memory, which is another reason it works.

Converting it to a graphic works because it is likely resaving it to disk, on a new segment, and not over the old segment. If it is corrupt data, you’ll find this option will likely fail in the future, especially if you have a hard disk the is getting full.

How much % of free space do you have on your drive?

Typically, any drive getting up to anything less that 15% free space is entering corrupt data territory. You need to free up some space (deleting those pics you’ve downloaded from the net :lol1: ) or think about getting a bigger hard drive.

    Hope that helps

    Cheers mate

I should add, ghosting your drive and reformatting it will probably help too, as it will re write the hard drive error map.

(Slip Dave Rogers a few beers and he may do it for you 😉 Better still, money may do the trick even better :lol1: )

Brian, if you go on the web to the hard drive manufacturers, they usually have a diagnostic program you can download, it will tell you what and how to fix problems. If as Shane suspects that is the problem

Thanks for that advice Nick. I’ve had the same problem as Brian when trying to defrag a hard drive – I’ll try it in safe mode as you have suggested 😀

Brian, there are different ways of taking programs off the start up menu depending on what operating system you are running, let us know what operating system you are using and I will post or PM you with how to do it.

Have you tried checking your hard drive for bad sectors at all?

hi nick re the defrag thing .ive taken a lot of stuff off but the defrag just keeps at 0%….occasionally going to 2% and returning to 0%

Is that in safe mode Brian?

If you have programs trying to run when you defrag this will keep stopping defrag and it will keep trying to restart, in safe mode you should only have the min of programs running so should run ok

Brian, if you haven’t tried to defrag your computer before and you have a lot on your hard drive then it may take hours to drfrag, as for it keep going back to zero don’t worry about it as this will sometimes happen as the computer moves stuff on the hard drive about. My advice would be to put it on defrag and then just go away and leave it. Come back a few hours latter to see how it is getting on or just start it before you go to bed and leave it to defrag overnight.

yepp the job is done …your right martin thats 3 hours or there about 😀 😀 .I suppose the best thing is to leave it on over night .So what has that done? ……is it just a case of everything in its right box …more efficient ?

That’s it Brian, more efficient, less time searching the hard drive.(and wasted 3hrs)

Brian, the easiest way to describe what a defrag has done is this. If you can imagine a cupboard that when you open it, everything is all over the place and you can’t find what you’re looking for without rummaging around for ages. So you clear it all out, putting things in a logical order and tidying it all so that when you open the door, you can see exactly what you need right away without wasting time and it appears as if you’ve got a lot more free space.

    ……. kinda 😀

wont know if itll sort the plotter problem or not …..the way i look at it is it cant be anything wrong with the plotter its had a few main boards fitted (well they were ment to be new ) 😕 and it works fine 90% of the time .Anyway ive decided to go for the cx24 Roland cutter in April im tired of this worrying . just over a grand …unless anyone else can recommend a better one for the price . In the meantime ill be good to this one …….you know make it a cup of tea now and again …..discuss 3rd world politics …..gardening …….home baking ……think i got to get out more im cracking up !!!!!

Yes thats pretty much what it does Brian, you can set the computer up to do this automatically for you say once a week or once a month depending on how much you are using it really and if you leave it on overnight when you get up it is all done and you don’t have to worry about it. You will find that now you have done it for the first time next time you defrag it then it will be a lot quicker

just to throw a spanner in here…. you are better to use a non Microsoft defrag program to get a good result….

Plenty of good stuff out there, but MS defrag is acknowledged in most industry circles to be the worst one you could use on a regular basis.

The thought is that they do not devote a lot of ‘research’ to it as it is not what they do best. Other companies do that software better, because utility software is basically all they do.

    Just adding my 2c’s

on a very technical level… i have not seen much as an alternative to microsoft defrag…. also I have experience defrag causing FAT issues to harddrives… however I do recommend defragging but everyone must backup lol

if you’re defrag keeps setting back to zero, then there is definitely something running that is causing it to stop.

Disconnect from internet (unplug it from router or whatever means you’re using)

Exit your antivirus software (yep, thats usually the one), run scandisk, then try your defrag again.

You could also go into msconfig (click start, run, type msconfig and hit enter) and you’ll see some tabs along the top. these will differ slightly depending on the O/S you’re using, but should have a ‘start up’ tab. go into there, and untick any programs that you really dont NEED to have running when you’re computer starts up, for example, MSN, yahoo messenger and other such stuff. It’ll prompt you to restart, so restart it. When it boots up, it’ll tell you that you are running in a special diagnostics mode. tick the box to not tell you about it again.

Again, disable youre antivirus and try your defrag again.

MSCONFIG exists on all windows operating systems since windows 98, so u should be able to get it ok.

Hi dcurzon, now remember you are talking to a CCN ( complete computer numpty) and jargon brings me out in spots. How do you know what to turn off in that list, besides the obvious, yahoo and tinyspell stuff.?

  • dcurzon

    Member
    5 March 2007 at 11:46

you can turn most of it off without any problems. i cant tell you exactly what you can and cant switch off in there, as it all depends on hardware/software that you have – for example, you could have a printer that has monitoring software running in the background. do you NEED that monitoring software to tell you the ink is low? i dont know… maybe you do… but unticking it and trying it without it running isnt going to do any harm (as long as you put your antivirus back on before connecting to the internet) and it’s easy enough to re-enable anything that you disabled, by ticking it again in msconfig.

if you like, you can put up a screen dump of what you have there, and i’ll be able to get rid of some of the stuff taht isn’t needed..
