With reference to the post on Post It Notes, whats the most effective merchandise (or is there such a thing?) you have ever seen, we are thinking of doing a mail shot and just wondered what is out there.
    Thanks

    Pens,
My competior and have to say good friend in the sign business, gave me a handful of pens one Christmas when i called in for a bit of craic,
with in a month all of my best customers were running about with one of his pens, every time i asked them how they got them, they said they got it off ME :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: when the signed an order and had put it into their pocket, as you do

Needless to say i soon got my own pens

Harry, I’m not sure if there is one type of merchandise that is the best, different people like and use different things which is probably why there are so many promotional items available, it is also probably down to the type of business and its size as well. A self employed plumber or joiner might think the pen you sent him was the best thing in the world but an executive for a bigger company might think it was a bit cheap and just bin it. It will certainly make an interesting thread as I am sure different people will have different views on what works best for them.

My opinion isn’t worth much because I don’t spend a penny on advertising or promotion.

However, I would have thought the best merchandise would be something that is going to sit on somebody’s desk all the time, and not be stuffed in a drawer, or hidden away.

Things like rulers, calculators, notepads – gear like that.

Harry, I change my promotional ideas regularly.

Right now, I’ve got pens with my details on them. Very successful in terms of people remembering me. Martin brings up a good point, but I do find executives use them too. Just make sure they are not a ‘cheap’ looking pen.

Before that I gave away A6 size note pads with my logo and details on the bottom edge. They worked a treat for a while, but were a bit expensive because people would just use them to scribble anything on, and perhaps not write notes to hand to people, which was what I wanted them to do.

I have had very good success with Fridge Magnets too. Although I called them filing cabinet magnets. If you give them out to businesses, put them on the cabinet yourself, instead of handing them to the person. That way, they’ll get left there and not put in a draw.

I did that about 2 years ago, and when people change jobs, the magnet is left on the cabinet, and the new person already has your details. I still get work off them, and I’ve been into offices that I have never been to before, and my magnet is sitting on a metal cabinet.

Thing is, keep rotating the ideas, as people get used to seeing the same thing all the time, and often don’t even see them after a while.

I’ve been given a few calculators over the years, but I’ve never done that myself.

Last financial year I gave all my major clients a bottle or two of Wine at the end of the financial year here (june 30). That has been my most successful campaign yet, the most expensive too, but it got me a lot referrals to other business, because everyone was so amazed at the gift, I was the talk of the town for a while.

Makes it hard to know what to do this year. I don’t think a pen will cut it in truth :lol1:

My best mate is the Danuk Australian agent here, brilliant stuff, but not sure it is really designed for smaller companies as a price effective tool on a small scale

I have used fridge/cabinet magnets (current), I engrave my own pens, again as Drew points out they are good quality and dished out sparingly as are small folded metal desk clocks. Ive handed out 3 to my best customers and its something that is sat on desks with my details on the face. For those of you in the sign business I would have thought this a no-brainer……

Buy cheap clocks, dismantle, vinyl up the face with your logo, put back together and pass on…………
