Mileage Charge
Posted by Rob Eppey on 24 February 2007 at 19:50Hello all, i have just been asked to sign write a fleet of vans in various locations. Can anyone let me know what an average mileage charge would be. I would be working up to about a 100 mile radius.
Cheers
Rob

Jon thanks for the quick reply. Spoke to another local company they said anything between 50p to £1. So 75p sounds alright to me.
cheers

well the tax man allows 40p per mile for private car use in connection with a business so to allow for profit I would be looking at about £1.20 per mile, I would also work out a per mile and an hourly rate, whichever is the greater, to be paid by the client. no good charging £1 per mile if you sit in traffic for an hour to do ten miles,
Based on the average city speed, £4 per mile would not be too high!
also consider if two people are travelling you need to factor in the second persons wages.

average speed of travel say topside 40mph = £30 @ 75p
If you charge your time out at £30ph, where is the cost of the transport?ok if you charge mileage+ an hourly rate, I presume thats what you do?
Are we looking at travel costs on top of time?

If you are using a van the 3rd colum seems about right , but this is the costs without profit,

A pound a mile. We are helped by being out in the country so even city work involves a howl up a motorway for a fair distance before we meet any traffic.
Some we win and some we lose, but as an average, it does the job for us.
We ALWAYS quote travel as a separate item. Sometimes it encourages the customer to bring the vans to us but even if not it shows them that our vehicle work is no more expensive than anybody else’s, it’s the add-ons that bump it up.
If anybody queries the cost I tell them that if we do the travelling they are paying for a highly trained and expensive fitter to sit on the motorway listening to Radio One, whereas if they do it they can use a minimum wage muppet driver. Surprising how often it works.
