for jobs where you dont need the transparancy the paper is cheaper and easier to work with – give it a try

A lot depends on personal choice, some people use clear tape all the time and are happy to pay the extra money, some people just cant get on with the clear plastic film at all.
As John has said if the application tape doesn’t need to be transparent then try using a paper tape, its a lot cheaper and there is probably a wider range of suppliers. I used to use paper tape for 90% of the work that I did and just kept a roll of clear for multi layer graphics where I needed to be able to see where I was placing the vinyl. -
ive always used paper tape, i absolutely hate the clear stuff.
ive tried a couple of different brands of it but just cant stand the stuff…
i hate the texture, the way my squeegee glides over it, how you have to cut it rather than tear it… yeck… horrible yucky stuff that tape
:lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:ok, now that i have that off my chest… ahem…
seriously though… it is a self preference thing again. my view is that the only advantage is really for multi-layer work. i dont see any further benifit from having it. the flip side is, for me, there are more disadvantages than advantages… maybe that’s just me though.

See I told you some people hated the stuff Phil, forgot that Robert was one of them. If I were you I would try contacting some of the suppliers and asking if they have any samples so you can try it, be a waste if you bought a whole roll and found you preferred to stay with the clear.

Like Rob I’ve never liked the clear tape. I had a part roll foisted on me once many years ago…never again, did everything I could to get rid of it. Horrible, horrible stuff!! Give me paper hi-tack any day!!
The advantage of paper, besides being a little cheaper is the ability to rip it, the added ‘flexibility’ as it’s thinner and it’s easy to lay IMO.
The clear had one major advantage – you can see through it…never an issue unless you are trying to line up dark blue text on a black shadow without registration marks.
I think I’m paying about £55 a log for hi-tack paper (Ri-mark / Ritrama) as although it’s cheap price – it performs pretty well & isn’t like some of the nasty (more expensive) ones I’ve had samples of.
Dave
ps. As Martin said – ask the suppliers to send you out a few samples – usually just a 100 or 200mm wide roll…MOST will oblige. But WRITE IN THE CORE where it was from as many come with blank cardboard tubes!!

Paper every time hate clear it has a mind of it’s own it seduces the vinyl to jump at it 😛 and ruins your graphic 🙄 I think it has a lot to do with static can and don’t use it.

Lynn I know what you mean about the graphics jumping up to meet it !!!
I don’t have a problem using it when I need to as I said above but applying the stuff can be a pain, I usually either tape the graphic to the bench if it is fairly large or if it is only small I tend to apply the graphic to the tape rather than the other way. Put the tape on the bench sticky side up obviously and then gently lay the graphic down on top -
That’s strange, I use the clear all the time. I actually love the stuff and have no probs with it at all. I like the fact that I can see whats going on with my graphic at all times…I guess we all work in different ways and its just a case of what you are used to. If we all did the same thing there would be no need for the help topics or vids…how boring 😀
Take care all
Paul
