Sun Strip
Posted by LeeMorris on 29 January 2007 at 10:01When i get my cutter working properly i have to do a sun strip for someone, on my outlines the windscreen curves down.
Should i cut to that curve or keep it straight?
Cheers

Lee,
You need to keep it straight. What I usually do is cut an oversized strip. Mark the required depth on the windscreen, down from each top "corner".fit the oversized strip getting your straight line along the bottom then felt squegee the thing into place. once you’re happy, take a blade and carefully trim off any excess. I would fit this wet. Hope this helps.

Sunstrips are always fun. I always apply oversize strips and then cut on the car to make it follow the curve of the roof. Similarly, with any overlaid text/logos I curve them as I fit to make them look right. You can do this on-screen but you’d have to know the exact curve and I wouldn’t trust the vehicle outlines to be THAT accurate.

Lee, don’t know what the police are like round your way but also remember there is a maximum height that a solid band is allowed to be. I have seen a lot of young drivers stopped and some have had these strips ripped off by the police because they said they were illegal.

pretty sure it’s OK as long as it does not foul the wiper blades. You can always put on shorter blades 😀

Hello
I Have a customer that want a sun strip applied to his car but as the wiper blade’s are very high on the window he wants me to apply it on the inside! That’s is going to be fun 😕 as the rear view mirror is going to be in my way I will try to remove it. Am thinking i will put it on flat and cut round the edges
Has Any one done one on the inside before??
Thanks Martin

Before you attempt to remove a rear view mirror from the windscreen you should know that I met a Police mechanic who attempted to do that once. He had a scar from the palm of his hand to half way up his arm from where the mirror pulled a lump of the windscreen off and it stuck in his arm. I’m sure there’s an easy way of removing them as windscreen installers must do it, but be careful.
Anyway, fitting a sunstrip on the inside of a window……should be easy enough. He’ll probably get nicked though.

Interior mirrors are often on two parts, the mirror and stem separating from the pedastall so leaving only a small part on the screen which can easily be cut round, worth checking,
