  • paint for foam board?

Posted by Lorraine Clinch on 16 January 2007 at 12:15

If I flood-coat the foamboard I will still have to paint the edges, so may as well paint the lot (me thinks), but what type/make of paint is the best to use?

The sign is for exterior use, this customer has everything else in coloured Alupanel, but wants to have a cheaper option for this one large-ish sign. (And yes, he knows about the warping…)

Just a thought… but could you not use black foam board andfflood it leave it black on the edge?

Lorraine, It just sounds like a bit of false economy to me. ie, sourcing then getting the paint then having the hassle of painting it. All takes time and what does time = £££££ 😀

Saying that , I did paint the edges of foamex letters in ‘Japlac’ from Focus or B&Q, worked fine and still looks good 2 years on.

Have you made a decision on your printer yet?

    Martin

The board is 30" deep, so I would need a join in the flood vinyl, as I only stock 610 wide. I just thought it would be less expensive and easier to paint the lot. I think I well may simply take a profit loss on this one and give him alupanel anyway. I have done a fair bit of work for him already, and have another order in hand after this one, and I will still have some change from his quote for this, so it’s only the time lost.

Screen ink rollered on might do it.

I have done this in the past for temp signage (site agent boards) and the still seem okay today

I have used 1-Shot rolled onto FoamCore.
Use a foam roller with no nap. (I don’t mean not to rest)
Do not over-roll, as this will cause bubbles, and make your last pass almost a "smear" by holding the roller still and lightly dragging it across the board.
Make sure your shop is dust-free as you will get little boogers in the finish.
Takes a whole day to dry and I would not apply vinyl for another day (and then use a wet app)
I’d leave the edges plain. Some paints, particularly spray paint, can eat the foam.
If he’s that cheap he will have to live with it.
    Love….Jill

Why not just fold the (excess) edge round by and inch or two? It’s what I do if I need to butt coated foam sheets together.

You’re flood coating anyway, the material would’ve gone in the bin – and it won’t matter if you have crap under it as it’s on the back.

I would do the same as Dave and just wrap the vinyl round the edge onto the back, give it a good heat and it will stay there for years, much easier than painting in my opinion.
Have you tried Amari plastics as I believe they do a sort of ivory coloured board.

I’ll give Amari a ring tomorrow Martin, thanks.
The sign is going on a 5-bar gate, so the back won’t look very pretty half wrapped. I’m still inclined to supply this in alupanel, as I wouldn’t be making a loss, just not as much profit as foamboard, but a lot less hassle!

If it is going on a 5 bar gate then you are not going to see much of the back of it, the top and bottom edge will be completely covered by the bars so that only leaves the edges where you would only be able to see maybe 3 small pieces. We are only talking about wrapping it around about an inch of the back at the very most. If trimmed neatly I don’t think the back would look bad at all.

I normally wrap the vinyl round the edges as well, but with it being on a gate I would also back it with 1/4" plywood to strengthen it.

You could use screen ink with a roller which works well, just do it quickly before the roller disintigrates.

For a good finish you can spray with a two pack paint from Cromalux – best finish I’ve ever acheived on foamex and easy to acheive.

Pvc inks work well if you call a company called appollo colours on 0208854 0017
