  • why do i get cyan print smearing problem with JV3-160S?

    happy new year everyone,

this is my first ever post. our shop has a 4 years old mimaki JV3-160s. it is our work horse for most of our printing jobs. we also have onyx productionhouse v.7 but running 6.5 at the moment.

regular maintenance were done to wiper, and ink caps daily. we soak the print head 10 min every morning (Triangle Bulk Ink system) to loosen up any clogs overnight and do a dishwash the end of the shift before turning off the printer.

we recently experience slight light cyan ONLY smearing to the left margin (each time the print head return) and inside white text for the first 5 ft of the print and slowly fade away as the print went on. we use standard 8 pass bidirectional mode with heat at 45/45 degree. we increased the heat as high as 55 and it seems to work in getting rid of the smearing but don’t work very well to certain heat sensitive material. The problem don’t exists in Fine/16 pass mode.

anyone experience this strange phenomenon? the strange part is if the print head start to show its age, other colour might smudge as well right? but it’s just very light cyan. i wish i can attached a sample image to show you.

your help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

I think the problem maybe on the tubing of the ink supply system. you increased the heat as high as 55 and you mention that the smearing problem doesn’t happen on the 16 pass mode, because the flow of ink in the tubing is not as big as on the bi-direction 8pass mode. So my conclusion is your tubing system may leaking air or too dirty. so you may need to change it and wash it. I hope it may help.

Hi Andrew. Welcome to the board.

    What happens in unidirectional mode?

hm, i have heard something like this with someone else…

tell me, is smearing the same as double printing image? or are you referring to ink contamination where the lt magenta and the lt cyan merge.

If you soak too much you can raise the cleaning fluid up the tubes to the dampers, on the 6 colour machine where the heads are shared, the inks will merge together and force you to suck ink thru or "fill up ink"

Smearing, im also thinking maybe a damper is damaged on the two light colours, cant be certain.

    thanks for the suggestions.

i think it might be ink contamination. not sure how to clean the damper but i’ll try to open up the print head tomorrow to see what i can do underneath.

john, unidirectional is too slow for the amount of jobs we have to run. it might work if worst comes to worst we have to use this mode.

Recently had the same problem, tech came out and replaced the dampners on the cyan, it seemed to do the trick. : 😎

We have the same problem with the triangle inks. I blame the cyan ink.

we’ve ordered and replaced the 6 dampers yesterday and still post the same problem with the smearing of the cyan.

adwiz, how did you fix your smearing problem with your jv3?

well, after tons of trial and errors, we decided to call in tech support and found the problems immediately.

    1. capping station need to be replaced due to wear and tear which may cause ink buildup into the print head.

    2. too many head crash will damage print head. we had a few of those so be very mindful to tape up those prints : )

I had the same problem on my Roland using Techinks. It was suggested by the Techink people here that I replace the capping station and it fixed it immediately. I now replace the capping stations every 6 months as part of my maintenance on all heads, never happened since.

Sorry I missed this post earlier.
