PC-60 Head Voltage Adjustment Instructions Needed
Posted by David Harvey on 2 January 2007 at 22:52I have just had to swap my head on my PC-60 as it hit a damaged piece of vinyl and destroyed its-self.
I have fitted a brand new one which I had got from Roland a while back, but for the life of me, I can’t find the instructions for setting the head voltage.
I also assume there is a setup for alignment which I a assuming is in the same manual.
If anyone could help, it would be really appreciated as I would hate to have to have a service tech at huge cost come in just to set the head up.
Many Thanks
David

Hi David
When I replaced the head on my PC60 a while back the techie advised me to purchase a bit of equipment to adjust the voltage, as the pins on the head are tiny, much smaller than most meters can cope with, but it made life much easier, and got everything working. Only cost a few squid, (postage was a killer though, worse than someone taking the p!sh on Ebay!). Phone Roland tech dept, they should be able to tell you what you need.
I also have the PC60 service parts manual in pdf, if anyone is interested I’ll email it for you.

With the PC60 you can be printing and all at once it’s not printing right. This is what I do to adjust print head voltage. One suggestion is to clean the pot on the main board. To do this you must remove the front apron to get at the pot. Once removed, you’ll see a circuit board on the far right. On this board is a pot; most of the pots are yellow. What can happen is that this pot gets dirty and the voltage will vary. Spray a little cleaner on this pot and turn it; just remember the position of it before you started. Another trick I use is to turn the pot counter clockwise a little and put a black ribbon in and try printing. At first you’ll probably get a poor print; this is normal. Now start turning the pot clock- wise just a little at a time and do a test print. Keep doing this until you get a good print with the black; when you do, stop adjusting the pot. The only other color this did not work for was silver, and then I used a silver ribbon to adjust. I used to map silver to black; after doing this I could use a silver bar code on silver. I know a tech from Roland will not agree with this but keep in mind the ribbon determines the voltage or heat and Roland in the past has changed this voltage to match their ribbons. The last update for the PC60 was a voltage change to the head which caused some ribbons from other manufacture to fail. By adjusting this you can make most other manufacturers’ ribbons work. Also the last update from Roland which they installed when they replaced the print head, changed the heat in the head quite a bit. An adjustment from the pot would not correct it. A fix for this would be to install the earlier version of software. This will also work for the PC 600 by using the tieout program as the PC 600 does not have the pot.

sorry ron i cant agree with this advice at all.
playing about with the pot is asking to blow the head
the voltage marked on the head is there for a reason else why bother to mark it to two decimal places.
if other manufactures ribbons don’t print don’t use them.do it by the book and enjoy long head life

Sorry Ron,
I must agree with Chris, when with the help of Lorraine’s supplied manual, I set up the head correctly, and it is fiddly to get the exact voltage on the pot, I had perfect print quality.
I would recommend everyone if careful with the head, I needed to change mine because of a lapse of thought when moving the machine, they are sensitive and need treating with respect if you want the best service.

Hi to everyone asking about the pc60 manual.
I am afraid it was lost along with the contents of the rest of my hard drive when it crashed last year.
As Chris has said, there seems to be someone selling it on ebay now. (Oh, and it isn’t me, if anyone was wondering!)regards
