Can i get 2 colour reflective vinyl for recovery truck
Posted by jaybo on 22 December 2006 at 13:40Hello everyone,Merry Christmas to all….
Ive been asked to supply and fit reflective 2 colour vinyl onto a recovery truck,, the vinyl i need is like the orange and blue which is similar to the reflective on emergency vehicles..
My question is simply can this material be bought on the roll already 2 colour and cut to width..Hope someone can help with this question as i would not like to have to apply all seperately..
Many thanks,

Tell us some more.
Is it chevrons, battenburg etc?
Most likely, you have to cut the individual pieces and fit them individually, but some chequer stripes are available off the shelf.
Also, what type of reflective?

This always gets VERY complicated when a customer asks. Either I’m just stupid (most probable) or it could be made easier for the likes of us.
Isn’t the real ‘honeycombed’ emergency vehicle stuff made to measure and sealed round the edges? I remember being told that it it needed to be water resistant or the effect would be lost once water got into it. This would make buying this particular stuff off the shelf, for cutting to size, pointless.
In my (small and narrow) experience the standard reflective (non honeycombed) stuff is available on 610mm and 1220mm rolls as is the standard vinyl for you to cut to size.

Well that’s the thing. The high conspicuity stuff you mention is about a million quid an inch and does need to be edge sealed. Plus you can’t really cut it on a normal plotter.
‘Normal’ reflective is no problem. Don’t be put off by the job looking awkward, it probably is, but that shouldn’t stop you. I’ve done hundreds of emergency vehicles and I’m thick!
Anyway, show us a picture of the vehicle/graphics in question and I’ll tell you how you might go about it.

Gareth, The diamond grade you mentioned does need to be edge sealed and you can buy a tool to do this but as Andy has said it is very expensive so unless you are going to specialise in this sort of thing then its not really worth your while.
The other reflective which we all use comes in different grades as most vinyls do and at differnt widths for friction and tractor fed plotters. As Andy has already said these jobs can be a bit awkward and sometimes time consuming but there are ways to speed things up a bit, if you can give us a bit more detail about what the customer would like I am sure we can sort something out.

I think you’ve both got the wrong end of the stick. I was offering advice to Jaybo who asked about the reflective stuff originally. I am quite au fait with the whole thing but thanks all the same.

It can be printed two colour on a gerber, but dosnt come cheap cos the avery vynil from spandex is expensive.

Well soooooorrrrry!
I was just speaking generally for anyone who cared, really.
Anyways, we need a bit more info from Jaybo I reckon. We don’t even know what he is referring to yet.

Its ok. It’s difficult to get ‘tone of voice’ right when your thoughts are written down, don’t you think? I always worry my posts are going to ‘sound’ uppity and – hey presto – one did! Sorry. I’m not really completely ‘au fait’ with it at all If a customer asked me what the laws were for example I’d have absolutely no bl**dy idea whatsoever.
Geesh.
