whats the best way to set up cutting chevrons?
Posted by simple signs on 4 December 2006 at 16:07Hi,
Will be cutting sum red reflective for a vehicle side.
They want chevron running full length of vehicle. I cant get my head round the best way to set the file up to cut and then piece to reduce the waste.
I hope i have made myself understandable?
Cheers

You’ve got several ways of doing this to minimise waste. You could buy a roll of vinyl at the correct width and trim it on the vehicle (risky, in case of bodywork damage) or you can cut the chevrons in the finished shape but butted together on the vinyl so they have shared cuts, if you know what I mean. I usually run a line of masking tape along where the top of the chevrons go, and then butt the interlocking pieces up to this and trim them at the bottom.
Sometimes it is more economical to cut yourself some stripes at the right width and then hand cut the ends of the individual pieces before you apply them, because the top of one piece becomes the bottom of the next. I know, clear as mud!

You certainly wouldn`t want to plot out chevrons.
The waste involved would destroy the job.
Order a roll of precut 150mm, 170mm or 200mm reflective, depending on the job and apply the chevrons individually.
Get some spare cheap vinyl you have lying around and using your plotter, make a triangle to stick on the bottom centre of the 2 rear doors.
This gives you your starting 45 degree angle on each door. Use the backing tape you have peeled off from the previous line to space out the next line.
Don`t do one door at a time, make sure you start at the bottom and complete both sides at the same time. ie don`t stripe all the way to the top of the offside door, then try to match the nearside.

Hi
if i remember right, chevrons for vehicle use should be at an angle of 60 degeesKev

The angle for the police vehicles is determind by drawing a line from the centre to the bottom corner, as stated in the home office pdf posted above.
But 60 degrees is mentioned for escort vehicles.?
The reflective issue rolls on and on, I wish someone could post a test case or prosecution details, then we would all know the definetive answer,
I have searched hansards without success.
There is probably a load of EU Regs as well, just to complicate matters..sorry pdf posted here
