  • whats the best backing for 3d effect & stainless steel?

    Hi all,
Still learning the trade, and need help with a sign problem I have not encountered before. I have a sign design problem, stainless steel cut out letters, that will have a 3d effect.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to the block mounting materials best to use. Best way to fix the stainless to the mount, as I am worried about the weight of the metal. Best contrasts colour wise to enhance the side but match the stainless, and any other general advice or "not to do’s" that you may have encountered over the years with external polished metal signs.

Letters are about 1 metre high with 50mm depth, faced with polished stainless steel, and will finally be mounted on a 50mm depth retangular block background to "outline" the sign, fixed to a brick wall about 3 metres from ground level.

I am worried about the weight of the stainless steel letters, as if we simply glue them to, for instance, a polystyrene block mounting to achieve the 50mm depth for the 3d effect, it is possible for the glue or the styrene to break down over time, releasing the letters.

I am based in Australia, in far North Queensland. The sign will be in full sunlight, and because it is the tropics, which means it is always hot, many plastics and styrenes do not last long here.

    Best regards
    Gregg

i dont fabricate my own built up stainless steel 3d letters. i buy them in.
they come with a 1.5 inch wide x 1mm thick stainless steel bridge.
the bridge/strap spans the width of the letter at various key spots.
there is then brass/metal locators/standoffs soldered onto the bridge.

    Thanks for that response Robert.
Guess we are not so lucky downunder, as cannot seem to find anyone who premakes that sort of lettering or metal work. Just have to find someone else on the boards here who has actually done something similar from start to finish themselves, who can offer suggestions.

Would certainly make life easier if could have it all predone, but then, as the saying goes, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Not to mention the price would drop too.

Thanks again. Others don’t be shy in sharing your ideas or other trials and tribulations you have had over the years with this sort of thing.

    No problem Gregg…
If you have a look at rich’s job here he has a different type of backing but still a good one. Obviously your letters are much larger and heavier.
