Shall I cut & weed this ?
Posted by Jon Stephens on 18 November 2006 at 23:22I have a customer who wants the following at 200mm high letters to on the side of a boat:
Should I cut or print this onto clear vinyl ?
Is this gonna be a pig to weed ?
Thanks
Jon
PS Anyone got this font .. as this is a trace of customer artwork at the moment.

I reckon that’s cuttable. You may lose a few of the smaller bits with wear and tear over time, but I would do it. A cast vinyl would help.

Thanks mate … thought it was just me bored with tv tonight !!
I’ll give it a go !

Not sure if this would help, but I have heard of people not weeding the vinyl until after it is on the substrate, this way the small pieces won’t get pulled off.

I’d cut it. I reckon it’s big enough and the finished job will look better than a print.
Weeding after application is a valid technique but you must be 100% sure of your substrate. Don’t do it on a painted surface, especially with a cast vinyl.

You could also weed after applying the app paper. I’m sure i’ve heard on here before of putting the vinyl in the freezer before weeding??? never tried it though.

Hmmm I’d probably give it a go. I’ve weeded cast vinyl after applying to cars before…My own logo has to be done this way unless it’s fairly large. It’s not that it’s complicated, it’s just got little bits that I don’t want to loose! Takes a while to do, but I like it. I haven’t yet tried weeding off the application paper, nor have I heard of putting the vinyl in the freezer! Anyone able to substantiate this? (Sorry think I swallowed a dictionary!)

I would suggest murdering your customer, but that’s illegal!
😳

PS I think you can get that font on http://www.dafont.com/ -
jill is so subtle 😛
looks weedable, but is that a photoshop effect on text? looks bitmappy

as has been said, weeding it normal shouldn’t be too hard, if you loose a bit weeding its probably better lost as it will come off the boat soon enough.
reverse weeding something that size is gonna be tricky if using a decent vinyl like a cast. you could end up with having to heat it to remove it or even adhesive left. its cold days remember and vinyl goes brittle damn fast! 😕
anyway…
use a sharp blade
CUT
WEED CAREFULLY
TAPE
FLIP JOB FACE DOWN
REMOVE CARRYING PAPER FROM JOB, NOT VICE VERSA.
FIT TO BOAT.
HEAT AREA TILL WARM, KEEPING THE GUN WAVING SO AS NOT TO OVER HEAT OR SCORCH SURFACE.P.S. make sure boat is out of water first 😉

Robert, you forgot one step.
POST PICTURE OF IT ON UKSB so we can all see the finished product.

No problem at 200mm……..cut – weed – and apply as normal….. 😀
